  1. Why does it need to be modified?

What would be wrong with a standard 110 with mud tyres?

    Everything must be modified :D

I couldn't live with a 110, seating + driving position are all wrong for me.

There is also the cost - a decent (ie TDI) 110 costs the earth and I'd never want to take it into the trees.

Besides - no wipe clean leather in a 110 :moglite:

  2. I've not done much 4x4 driving of late, the reasons have been building MogLite, family and work commitments etc etc.

It was brought home to me this morning, when I was sorting through some digital pics on my laptop.

From about 2000-2005 I was out at least once a month, first in the Camel Disco, and then in the Ibex.

But I've noticed as the vehicles I own get more and more capable - the less and less I use them :(

I've completely lost the competition bug, but damn it was nice to mess about at a site day, or bimble around on a green-lane.

Got me thinking about how to re-live those "glory years". My Ibex is a non starter, as I need to be able to take my kids out too. My Isuzu is way too straight to be bouncing off of trees.

I came to the conclusion that the BishTail is about the right comprimise between cost, performance and usability :D

    • Comfortable four seater
    • Reasonable suspension and grip
    • Simple, easily repaired and economical
    • Quite nimble and light
    • Simple winch setup.

I'm currently thinking with a pair of LandCruiser/Patrol axles on it - it'd be a real good weekend warrior capable of 90% of what a site day has to throw at it, and yet remain fun and a challenge to drive well.

Maybe a Bobtail will replace some of my fleet sometime ;) anyone wanna part-ex one for an Ibex....

  3. That was pretty much my criteria when I bought my Isuzu.

A "BigHorn" would fit the bill a treat.

I've got a single bed in mine, and its great for crashing out - slept like a baby at Billing.

The auto might struggle to get 25mpg, but a manual certainly would.

I doubt they are as good as the LandCruiser, but you do get a lot more car for your money. I couldn't bring myself to pay £4k for a G-plate LandCruiser.

Decent Isuzu's are about 2K and you'd have a job to spend 4K on one IMHO.

  4. ...I lost a caliper, managed a field repair and drove home(local event)

then waited for a new caliper to arrive so I drove around fro a few more days minus a rear brake.

funnily it made next to no difference to the braking of the car.

I'm sure the solicitor acting on behalf of the bus-shelter full of flatened people.....may view things a little different.

Anyone want to buy a nice tow-truck - just to make sure..... :P

  5. Andy,

I just get the feeling that whilst you may get answers you may just regret this post :hysterical:

Anyway, serious question, does the hover need to be colour coded for either Moglite or "The Suit" ?

    Nige :P

I'm old enough and ugly enough to take the flak

Colour - no preference, but an anti-slip rubber coating is always a useful thing to have...........

  6. Hardly hardcore fab - but what the heck.

Is there such a thing as a decent 12V vacuum cleaner ?

My 240v workshop vac has died

The new Dyson in the house is very unwiedly

The little rechargeable dustbuster we've got is useless.

Be nice just to plug something into the fag lighter - rather than drag a 240V from the house.

    Any recommendations ?

    Andy

  7. Not quite what you are after, but there is a cool Ibex camper of a similar spec to what you describe.

    Ibex.jpg

    Camperbex

I can't remember if its 130" or 150" wheelbase, but the rear axle is a Salisbury, but with the short side replaced with a long side, to give a central diff, and more importantly a wide track for the demountable body.

  8. The trouble with securing the body, is as the suspension compresses, the straps can come adrift. Without air suspsension, I doubt you'd be able to strap a 4x4 down onto the bumpstops easily.

However when I tow next time, I'm definately going to strap/winch the body down, to take out some of the float, but the wheels will be securely strapped too.

  9. A mate of mine needs to do some body work repairs - actually wheel arches on a Nissan Patrol.

He's got an arc welder, but no MIG.

Has anyone tried one of these from Frosts ?

My suggestion was to get a spot weld gun for his arc welder, these are about £50 off of eBay. Along with a joddler - I think that'll be bang on.

Anyone had any success with body repairs and an arc welder ?

  10. I've got a PRT. It's so good JST and TJ101 tried to steal it; Moglite had to eat his words and one or two others who shall remain nameless have tried to buy it off me.

Actually that was the only time I've seen a PRT work. So its about a 20:1 ratio now.

I sold mine on eBay, as I wouldn't palm it off onto anyone I knew.

Si/Chris's anchor looks well nice, and is very light. When the time comes - I'll definately follow Will Warne's lead and write a cheque for one

  11. I really enjoyed it.

With the weather and mud - it seemed to remove the need to see every stand, examine every car, and get the best bargain, and concentrate on the social side.

Friday lunchtime was a bit of a low though with the weather.

I though it was ironic that the one stand I couldn't be bother to trek though the mud to, was Trailmasters - they were well flooded, and must be hoping bad luck doesn't come in three's.

I did get a really nice ali hawse for £20 which I was well chuffed with.

  12. Recipe for confusion

    Ingredients

    One 13 mm spanner

    5 mins

Take one automatic range rover or discovery. Crawl underneath with the 13 mm spanner, remove the ZF gear selector from it's shaft and replace upside down. ie; pointing upwards.

Once complete, stand back and marvel at the total confusion of the driver when he discovers he appears to have many, many reverse gears and only one foward...

    Taste the difference.

Or when he goes to drive off, he actually reverses into the people/things behind him

Sounds bl00dy stupid to me :angry:

  13. Sorry to ask what may be a dumb Q and be slightly OT, but what is the minimum spec for a PDa to run memory map. I read on one of the other threads that it needs a 800 x 600 pixel screen. Does this mean it won't run on a smaller one or just is harder to use. Can I make it run on my Navman F20, which has an SD slot; if not & If I was trying to get something cheap & cheerful to run memory map with GPS function as a 'you are here now, to get home turn left type thing' what should I go for new / secondhand?

Please try not to be too technical. TIA :) .

Memory Map will run fine on 640x480 - thats what I use.

It will show you where you are - realtime, scroll etc.

The trouble comes when you mess with tracks etc. The save track button is outside of the 640x480 window !!

  14. If you fancy some bullet proof Nissan Patrol axles. A mate will have some available at the end of the month.

    Circa 1992 so coil spring.

Not sure if the rear is disk brake yet, and its possible the rear might have a LSD or locker. He hasn't collected the vehicle yet.

He'll be looking at about £500 a pair, based in Dorset. Suspension links and props available to help anyone considering a transplant.

When I say bullet proof, I'm actually quoting Reads90 - circa 2006. But as he drives a Toyota now, these are probably worthless scrap, but Toyota axles will be worth a gazillion pounds, and take 53" tyres, 900bhp with no oil or grease in them for 100,000 miles :lol::lol:

  15. I've got a similar winch mount to that with a M8000 in it.

With steel cable and a steel hawse, its pretty heavy to haul around. I've got some plasma to go on it, and a ali hawse is on the shopping list.

I'm going to put a reciever mount in the loadbay of my Isuzu, for storage, probably tied into the seatbelt mounts for the 7-seat stuff, as I don't want a winch hitting me in the back of the head.

I'm also going to put a mount on my trailer.

    Hope it helps
