  1. I don't think Al's tyres are any more agressive than yours alas.

Thought about a tyre groover ?

There used to be a Babcross style tyre available in 9.00x16 in Italy - that'd give you some grip at the expense of any road manners.

Weren't the Fedima tyres very cheap in Belgium. Cheap enough to warrant a trip ISTR.

  2. Lame prog alas :(

I normally like Clarkson, but he seems to be forced into a bigger and bigger ego, and tonights show was a step too far.

3 x awesome sports cars, and they park them outside of dodgy hotel and get caught up in traffic jams and road works - nah.

Some better stuff later in the series by the looks of it.

  3. The tow-bar law changed for vehicles registered after 1st Aug 1998.

Seems you can only have EEC approved bars and balls.

So how can you legally fit a NATO hitch to something like a TD5 Disco ?

The reason I ask, I've got a medium term plan to build an expedition outfit, with a trailer. This law is potentially going to limit me to R-reg vehicles or older.

    Thanks

    Andy

  4. Bit of a change of topic, but can anyone point me to a very long reach jack for as little cash as possible?

I need to lift my Mog and my current jack is about 18" short of reaching the axle...

(Cheap big axles stands also good).

    Cheers, Al.

    This works pretty well

Its a regular 2-3 tonne trolley jack. Remove the saddle - put in a 12" extension tube - replace the saddle.

I've got a mahoosive set of axle stands, when I get them back off of loan - I can store them in your workshop :D

I doubt they see much wear and tear there ;);)

  5. It doesn't have to be LR, one of the better installs I've seen is Andy's Bighorn

Thanks - I'll pay you later.

Mine cost £40 for the fittings, and I sold the 7-seat conversion for £50, and as I had the ali-sheet, Engel and hot hand-wash - hardly an expensive project.

Works brilliantly. I've slept in it a few times too, and that works fine. Still got enough boot space for a weeks groceries

I wouldn't change anything if I was doing it again.

  6. Just purchased 2 from Foundry 4x4 £80ish each+delivery

I got one from Foundry at Billing.

The compessor seems fine, but the quick release fitting on the hose leaked on mine. So I chopped it off and replaced it with PCL fittings.

They claim to take up to 60amps. Maybe pumping 150psi into a tank, but I've pumped up my tyres to 45psi as a test, and current draw has remained at 30 amps or less. Mine is hardwired into a 30 amp feed with a 30amp blade fuse, and its been fine.

I've also removed the base plate and bolted mine down permanently behind the rear seat, and in front of the Engel - lost space previously.

With one of the attatchments on the end - makes a passable blow-gun - which might be useful on the trail

What are those doors off? The ones on the lockers? I am sure that I have seen them somewhere else so I wonder if they are a "standard" design of locker door. They appear to have the seal built in which would make for a very easy solution.

Er yeah its a cooker on wheels

  8. Hmmm looks bad for the RB44's then.

Walfy - be good to get some feed back off of the driver next week - ta.

But Lovejoy has offered a glimmer of hope - in that Dodge 50's are good, but RB44's are bad.

I thought it was just badge engineering - but maybe not.

Could be a winner especially as my first choice would be an ex-Southern Electricity or similar as I want a crew-cab.

Mr Freeagent - these vehicles are rated anywhere between 5,500kg and 7,500kg ISTR. So quite a bit heavier/payload than a 130.

and this just don't look right to me.

A Stonefield with a diesel conversion would also fit the bill, but they all seem pretty old/rare/rusty by now.

    A pinzgauer is too spendy

Something 5-7.5 tonne and 4x4 crewcab is a pretty rare thing.

  9. Been looking at overland vehicles for a long time.

Alas for what I want a Land Rover isn't big enough, rather than go Unimog, I think a RB44 would be about right size/cost etc.

Could be a civilian Dodge 50 or Renault S75 - they seem to go under many names - but something like this.

    post-16-1188470508_thumb.jpg

I've found a reasonable amount of info on the web, but I have no idea how they drive.

Has anyone driven a later one with PAS and disc brakes.

I'd be interested to know how "civilised" the driving experience is - noise, performance, vibration that kinda thing.

This is a potential long-term project - but it will still be finished before Astro_Al's Unimog :)
