  1. You can look at fitting RR/Disco springs, and fitting the RR rubber isolator rings. This will make the ride more supple and less harsh than standard 90/110.

Downside is you'll have more roll with increased pitch and dive. Combining this with heavy duty shocks and Anti roll bars will give you softer ride and better handling. ARB's will affect your articulation off road though.

  2. Thanks Steve ;)

Nige, back in ya cage! :>

Was interested as RRCs have self-levelling suspension.... so.... wanted to check the legality of a retrofit in this case :)

Yes a RRC would be fine. As you say you need to find a complete headlamp unit. There seem to be quite a few LED units appearing, but again they are quite pricy, some £900+ a pair. A number of them are under 2000 lumens too, so would be ok in UK without washers and self levelling.

  3. Here's the response from VOSA, that explains why they won't fail if not fitted, as MOT testers will not have the ability to test light output

Subject: Re: Retro fit LED headlamps without self levelling and washers

    Dear Mr. G******

Thank you for your email enquiry dated 20th December 2012, concerning the

    above.

VOSA can only comment on the MOT scheme.

HiD and LED headlamp levelling and washing systems will only be tested

where they are fitted. If they are found to be inoperative or otherwise

obviously defective they will fail. In the case of headlamp levelling, the

tester must be certain that the system is operative before failing, as on

some of these systems it is not possible to readily determine that they

    work as intended.

The reason the test is this way is because not all HiD headlamps are

legally required to be fitted with these systems. To be mandatory, the

headlamp has to be over 2000 lumen. Generally, it is not possible for an

MOT tester to determine whether this is the case, so the test is

'simplified' to take account of this.

DfT produce a factsheet on aftermarket HiD headlamps at

    http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...dlamps.pdf

although this does not mention the 2000 lumen requirement.

If you have any further queries regarding the legality of these lights, you

should contact the Department for Transport at ww.gov.uk/dft and select

"Department for Transport" as the section to which you wish to address your

    query.

I hope this information has assisted you with your enquiry, but if you have

any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us again.

    Kind Regards,

    Stephen

  4. Also, the links to tax free defenders on ebay are getting boring: we all know the score so why repeat the same chat over and over again?

    Daan

Isn't this a bit hypocritical??? One minute moaning about people jumping on threads and being negative and now complaining about others boring repetitive posts. Personally I agree with you about eBay posts ;) ;)

Not you Daan, but also previously other people posting about 'bolt on babies', 'fitting mud guards, LED's etc' - again isn't this the same as someone jumping on a thread and being negative about SVA's.

So what's the consensus? Is it the case that nobody posts about builds, events etc anymore because of all of the bolt on babies and SVA police here, or because the tech only emphasis of LR4x4 has made this a dull place to be? Or maybe both?

  5. As linked in the other thread, its still illegal to retrofit HID's unless you follow DVLA guidelines. There appears to be one exception that VOSA have confirmed, but yet to have DVLA confirm, and that is there apparently is a 2000 lumens limit. If below this limit, you can fit HID or LED headlamps legally without self levelling and washers. Again they still need to be an e approved headlamp unit designed for light source in use.

As also mentioned in other thread, what's tested in MOT means nothing.

Having said all of that its up to you what you fit. Personally with headlamps I'm inclined to fit what's legal and as Jason pointed out crystals with uprated lamps like nightbreaker plus are very good.

    Cheers

    Steve

  6. For LR4x4 the frequency of new topics and responses to those are definitely down, the amount of organised trips are definitely down, the amount of organised events are definitely down. It seems, however, that the people that mostly post here seem to be happy and the funding is in the green so it looks like it is going to stay that way for now :(

Just my personal opinion :) :)

  7. All sensors have waterproof connectors on

The one way valve on air intake works fine, but if you don't trust them also extend fuel tank breather as that has a one way valve on too.

Air intake box has an EGR outlet - if EGR was removed make sure this is blanked off ok

    Extend axle breathers

As for the ECU, it depends how deep you want to go. You can waterproof ECU seat box, and as long as you are not in really hot temps all of the time you can seal breather holes in ECU and this will suffice.

If you want to regularly have water over the seat boxes, then yes you can move ECU, but you'll also need to move 10AS too, something that most people seem to overlook surprisingly. Also if you are going to do this on a regular basis I'd recommend moving both fuse boxes higher up as the relays are not up to regular immersion.

    Cheers

    Steve
