  1. Sitting 'in chambers' building my 'when I win the lottery' workshop I came across this, can't help but think there's too much motor there?
  2. How near rear cross member? And is cross member ok? (give it a good smack with hammer near jacking points). Not done a 90 but on a 110 a replacement cross member with extensions comes about 1' forward. These 'glove' over chassis. Would this cover it? Otherwise it's 3mm thick (or thereabouts) steel and a happy morning's welding.
  3. After a delay of only three months I think it's sorted. Two new thermostats, a radiator cap and a radiator swap and no improvement. In a desperate throw before taking heads off to check gaskets I set about a thermostat with side snips and cut off wiggle pin thing. (I assumed that the 'expensive' type with hole and wiggle pin would bleed) Carefully filled radiator and started her up. Now I must confess that I've never heard a hippo fart (not that common in Yorkshire) but the V8 tried it's best to do an impression. Stunned and bemused expressions all around! Poor little thing just needed winding! A good burp and she's happy again When I checked the ball on the wiggle pin it's a good sphere. So good that it actually seals very well, obviously not letting air through when under pressure from water pump. Many thanks for the advice. Sorry I took so long to listen
  4. Little shop on corner? Forgot about that, will give a try. Thanks!
  5. She who must be feared has upset my plan to nip to York tomorrow to pick up a tin of bronze green with an errand (for her) to Doncaster. Any recommendations for a paint supplier in Doncaster area? I've tried a Google but all you get is (useless) business directories. I'm after a liter of brushable paint to give Hatty her spring refresh. And cover a slight incident caused by a Tesco bollard. It was it's fault. Honest.
  6. Thanks to my daughter's e-thingy savvy I'm now the proud owned of a couple of opening windows (well, they will be when I shift the crud). Don't know if genuine or pattern but they're missing the outer trim seal (can't complain at £20). I'm guessing that they're from a 90, are all the seals the same? They're riveted type and the outer face has a 'dove tail' for the trim about 1/4" wide.
  7. I'll be controversial back then. a) there's a fortune awaiting the person who can train a dog not to chew what they're not supposed to. b) poorly fixed? Who said anything about it being poorly fixed? Have you looked at the seat fixings of 'an ordinary car'? Most likely 4 bolts into fixed nuts. All welded to a bit of 16swg (more likely 20swg) 'play doh' steel. I'm talking a proper frame with at least 4mm thick backing plates. One of the reasons I love my Land Rover is that I can modify to my satisfaction. It'd be a poor outlook if the 'it might not be safe' brigade took over and everything had to be TUV approved. Yes a bodgit would be dangerous, but it's equally likely that a good job would exceed what's legal or economically viable for a mainstream manufacturer to make. Phew! I'll get off my high horse now!
  8. Labradors have stuck again and I'm in need of a rear seat for the 110. The 'enemy' has decreed that this time it's to be forward facing, she objects to cornering with side ways seat. And could she have a seat belt? (bounced her off the seat, hit roof and back again with an enthusiastic ride down a farm track the other day). Now as it's likely to get 'a bit chewed' I'm not parting with £hundreds so it's something from the breakers. And it needs to be able to fold away. A bit of adaptation and welding is no issue but what to go for? Anybody any suggestions? Nissan Serena?
  9. Just got my 110 through as class 4. Checked with MOT tester, he in turn checked with VOSA and they confirmed class 7 rule not in force and no planned date (yet) to impliment.
  10. When I bought Hatty (many moons ago) she had the spare on a mini roof rack. Nice bit of kit, well made, very strong. And utterly useless. It's been down the side of garage since I first tried to change tyre. Took two of us with 6' steps to get it down. Didn't even try to get one back up. Would be near impossible at side of motorway.
  11. £2572.90! Here's some I made earlier; http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=48828 Still got them. In a fetching shade of peeling bronze green! Inner box was made from marine ply. Screwed, glued and varnished. About £15 to make both. A sub-frame to chassis from 1" sq from scrap yard. Total cost including locks about £35. Lasted me years and totally waterproof. Inner boxes now doing sterling service on shelf as storage. Now for £2572 I could make you some really nice ones..............................
  12. Can 110 side panels be made to accept 90 windows? 'She who spoils all my fun' is thinking of summer and keeping her poor little doggies cool (while the gits eat my fold up seat base ). I currently have fixed windows (the slightly oblong type) but she wants opening ones. I have a spare set of side panels so not restricted by current window cut outs but I can only find 90 type for sale. (does anybody make them for a 110?). These go almost full depth of the panel but both my sets of side panels have a reinforcing members horizontally and vertically which are in the way. Has anybody removed these successfully to accept opening windows?
  13. I have a complaint! This link just cost me the entire evening. And my tea's in the dog.
  14. Air locking would explain intermittent occurrence but it's not been touched in 10K miles. Would have thought it'd have played up before now?
  15. Latest trick from cold is to warm up as usual, and then keep on going. Would go right into the red but (clever me ) I have a warning light set at 90 degrees. Pull up, give it exactly one cig to settle. And she's fine for rest of day. Only does it occasionally. But it's very annoying. Top hose cold. So it's the themostat sticking closed?
  16. I have my doubts about how serious any politician is taking this. They'll promise the world. Tomorrow. If it doesn't cost them. These days I drive to work. 20 years ago I went by train. My company used to put on buses or subsidise the train. It was good, went where I wanted to go and I could get a kip in on the way. They were stopped by the tax man as it was a 'benefit in kind'. Tax man = government. So, thanks to the government, I drive. I also have cause to trundle down the M180 on occasion. There's a hundreds of lorries using this road from Immingham to get back to main north/south motorways. Immingham was built by the railways for the railways. A 60 mile round journey (at about 6mpg?) could be saved by using the railways to take the load to, say, Doncaster as a start point. But we haven't done that kind of joined up thinking since the Victorians. There's a lot of pressure from the haulage companies for bigger lorries 'cos they're more efficient. I agree. But why play at it with 50 tons when we've had the ability to shift 2000 tons for over 100 years? I wonder just how much fuel current policies are saving? My 110 uses fuel big time, so out of financial necessity I use it sparingly. My wife's Fiat does about 60mpg. So cheap to run we use it for a lot more miles than are strictly necessary. Given that we all have finite money to spend on fuel doesn't more efficient = more miles?
  17. If I get my arse into gear and get waxoiling my 110 should still be around in 50 years. Maybe. (doubt the gear box will though. Or me) What's it going to run on? I doubt all the renewable fuels added together would cover 50% of demand with current technology, and politicians are pissing in the wind if they think we'll willingly reduce consumption. And demand from developing countries will only increase. Real alternatives? Hydrogen? Seems to me that the problem with wind is that it's variable. Using it to make hydrogen gives a storable fuel? Or from wave power? Or solar power? Coal gas? One thing we're not short of is coal. Discounted as dirty years ago but could it be cleaned up. Nobody seems to be trying very hard to find out. Biofuel? Lot of growing room needed, is there enough? Especially if all the land is covered in turbines? Algae farms? My (cynical) take is that at the moment we're collectively giving environmentalism lip service with some window dressing to make us feel better. When push comes to shove we'll be digging coal up again so we can carry on just the same as always.
  18. I'm not claiming any expertise but a friend made an interesting comment: The climate got warmer since the 50's, noticeably so in the late 80's. Exactly the same period that the west cleaned up it's factory emissions (clean air act and all that). It's currently stabilised. Which coincides with expanding economies pushing a lot into the atmosphere. His theory is that the crud we were pushing out actually caused cooling. Either way, man made or not what is for sure is that oil won't last forever and we should be thinking of alternatives. I for one will welcome the first steam powered Land Rover!
  19. I've a Clarke hoist and (for once) machine mart are spot on. If it's been stood, or laid flat it seems as if the oil needs 'priming'. I do just what they advised; lift arm by hand then let it return. It'll go about half way down and will then pump. I then pump it up and down a couple of time to ensure all is well (might be something soft and squishy, like me, underneath ).
  20. Me too. Nut held in spanner with a bit of blu tack and assistant around front to hold/turn jet housing.
  21. It gives you a very knackered feeling when it doesn't though!
  22. You're on the right lines, 2.25's take a lot to hurt them so it should start but I'd; Take plugs out and clean Take distributor cap off, clean out spiders etc. If points are closed I'd open and give faces a wipe with petrol on rag. Petrol in carb will be off. Drain float chamber. Carb probably gummed but there again...... Give HT leads a good squirt of WD40, they'll probably have got damp in. Don't overdo choke. Stand back and light blue touch paper......
  23. A trip to Maplins and a busy morning. Two 3w 33ohm resistors (40p each) and a switch. Tried them in parallel and (in my hand) they seemed a bit fierce at 12.75v from battery. In series they just got warm to 'a bit hot' . Two in series it is then, one for front and one back. They're in a 'ceramic' block, about 20x5x5mm. This fits perfectly on the flat below the jets, glued them on with epoxy. Getting wires to front a pain, bulkhead is double skinned behind washer jet and feeding wires a bit fiddly. As was feeding wire through roof lining to back. Power on and nothing blew up! Can't report yet on how well it works as it's thawing today (well, it would wouldn't it?). Jet housing seems to be getting 'warm' (as opposed to bl@@dy freezing, like my fingers). This is probably better than a melted puddle of plastic. We'll see what happens in morning...........
  24. A reflective trudge around the block behind a cigarette and a dog lead and I think I've cracked it! What I need is a small, cheap, 12 volt heating device that I can attach to the jet housing (there's a gap of about 1/4" between the rain channel and the housing). I already have loads! Light bulbs! (Genius! almost had to lie down in snow to get over giddy fit). One small bulb, say 5w, wire it in to switch and gob it in place with black silicone to hide light. Patient applied for!
