  1. Well all I can say is glad I rebuilt completley my 1990 Defender and birthday today ant geting any younger and hope it will see me out so I won't have to worry about what they replace it with (as long as I can get parts

    You'll always be able to get parts (of some description) they might be expensive (one day) so stock up now while they are cheap!

  2. i found when i did this my overheating was worse as the coolant flow wasnt right, id suggest reinstalling heater and also check it out for good flow before re-fitting

    IIRC The heater matrix has a constant flow going around it, it is always "on" so it would act like a radiator... the normal over-heating "get me home" solution is to whack the heater on full, so it would suggest not having it on the system at all would cause you grief!

  3. The Defender in its current guise is a poorly built, badly put together pile of poo, by a company with no sense of history,that lost interest in building rugged working type 4wds over 15 years ago. The only exclusive mechanical assembly on a Defender worth a damn is the LT230 transfercase.

    IMO the real Defender that many of us want is personified by the Foers Ibex, but with stronger diff/axle assemblies.

    There is currently a thread on General 4x4 Discussion on Pirate 4x4.com titled 'The Resurrection of modern 4x4s', apparently started by a Mitsubishi Boffin, asking forum members what they would like to see incorporated into a heavy duty high capability 4wd that is easy to modify,repair and maintain.

    The consensus so far, well actually a consensus of 2, them being Gremlin and I, is that the Foers Ibex fitted with selected components from the Mitsubishi parts bins would be the dogs danglies as well as a worthy replacement for the Defender. The only problem I see is that Mr Foers couldn't build them fast enough in his farm shed assembly plant, and might need to add a couple more sheds Lol.

    Your right, trouble is the IBEX is low production. And JLR have a limited parts bit to draw from now.

    Personally, I'd go more radical than the IBEX.

    It's pie in the sky, but I'd use the turbine power source:

    Direct drive 4 electric motors, one on each wheel, like this:

    With a small battery to allow regenerative braking, power manipulation.

    This would have the potential to be phenomenally reliable and present an ultimately configurable platform.

    The chassis, and you would keep a chassis, would hold the key to safety all the required parts, sensors, etc, (which could be removed for developing world/military applications).

    LR need to develop the platform not the vehicle, that much is obvious.

  4. Personally, I'd take it back to first principles.

    You don't want a defender replacement, you need the natural evolution of the vehicle.

    The DC100 isn't adventurous, simple or radical enough.

    The truth is the defender is horrendously labour intensive, JLR are using this as an excuse to bin it and move production offshore!

    Interesting times.

  5. I need a little tiny bit of paint to do my new hinges over the weekend. I know it's expensive, but I'm in a rush and I know halfords mix it in shop...

    So I ask behind the counter and "computer says no" was the response.

    Has anyone been able to the official paint codes Arles, Windjammer, Pacific Blue LRC.424 into halfords speak?

  6. Welcome to the forum and the wonderful world of Land Rovers!

    Spend your money on good tyres, BFG all terrains or the like.

    Other than that, add something to allow you to tow and be towed and that's your lot.

    Defenders are fantastic just as they are, anything else is just window dressing really. Take the opportunity to learn how to drive her well and you'll be grand!

    Then get her serviced, serviced and serviced.

  7. LRO Subscription

    What is that ‘thing’ that came free with the latest edition of LRO – It’s a black fabric tube.

    I have looked inside the magazine but didn’t spot anything that would enlighten me – I'm sure somebody on here will know!

    I used to subscribe up until they printed a review of wheel braces, which they must have re-used from a sister publication because none of the fitted a defender.

    Anyway a new subscription was a surprise birthday present – though there is no sign of the ‘free Gift’ Socket set that is supposed to accompany the subscription.

    No Suprises there then!

    Latest?!? That was months ago...

  8. The part that I need to cut holes in is the base of an enclosure within the trailer. It seems to be welded construction so I cannot easily dismantle it to get the sheet on the bench and I can only take it to someone else if I take the whole trailer there and not sure how easy it would be for them to cut inside the box either.

    Another alternative would be to cut a great big square hole and bolt down a mounting plate - so I can drill some smaller holes around the edge and jigsaw a square-ish hole in the middle.

    It would be useful to have a picture. :)

    It's not hard to drill holes in stainless, you just need good bits and a bit of a feel for it. Have you got any scrap you can practice on?
