  1. We all know this don't we, never drink and look on ebay.

Thought I should do email tonight as really ought to email my buddy who moved back to OZ last week.

I am normally quite good at not buying anythin in particular, but, well, Jack and Jim were over and then Johnny's red label was needing straightened and, I will be the proud owner of a 42" led light bar by the end of the week :(

Just after Christmas I bought 6 square led work lights and 4 square spot lights as the sale was on, now WTF am I gonna do with a 42" light bar? You know in new money its a meter+, 105cms long.

The small square ones I knew about, this elephant of a thing, I have even surprized myself :o

Drink responsibly people, disconnect the wi-fi when you crack open the Whiskey ;)

  2. I often worried too, but after 10,000+ kms I realized how fruitless any worry was :)

I only tend to get excited about big chunks now and even then only a little, easier to plan a reconditioned box to replace it with and enjoy the rest of the day.

when I worked on heavy plant we used to get our oil lab tested, every axle, planetary hub, drop box, engine, gearbox and hydraulic system from everything on the firm, it helped to determine component lifespans and enabled planning of exchange components to minimize machine down times, although expensive, not as expensive as having a 50T digger sitting still with shot hydraulic pumps with 5 or more dump trucks standing idle until it's back up and running, that can take weeks!! Believe me, I had it on my Komatsu PC450 :(

  3. Just gonna pipe in here, unless you have intent on regular use, get a demountable cradle with the big fat Anderson connectors, it enables front and rear winching, lets you leave it in the garage when not needed(although "you never know" gets talked up, reality is you have to go looking for things to winch), if weather turns south, strap it down in the back an you're covered.

First winch? My guess is yes, so buy cheapy chinese one to start, can be had for less than 200 sheets, as HH says, get some training, it will probably save your, or someone else life!

Cannot stress secure mountings enough!!!! Chassis has to be tip top or it can get messy!!!!!

Buy one, use it and above all, enjoy it :D

  4. Looking to fit a light weight luggage rack on the front lower part of the roof, it will also double as mounting for my spot/flood lighting.

Can't buy what I want so just gonna suck it up and build it myself.

Mounting it is the only quibble, whats best, bolt through the gutter with use of copious amounts of sealant or find/make gutter clamps for it?

    Ideas? What have you done?

  5. HH, you sound very much like me, only wiser.

I hope that something comes from this, whether it be a VNT blower or simpler ring and pinion gear solution?

I too admire Daans series, but I like comfort and use mine as the daily barge, something a Defender or Series couldnt offer on my limited buying budget, hence my rebuild of a cheap Discovery (modern Defenders have heaters that actually work :o but still leak water in lol)

  6. Whilst shuffling stuff in the garage I managed to knock my second spare on its side, normally not a problem but it landed on a bit of wood with a nail in, and in it went :(

This is leaking air from the middle of the sidewall, but is it now scrap or can it be patched from inside? Tyre is still 75% good tread and it'd be a shame to have to throw it away!

My gut says scrap but I don't really know?

  7. Yes you can, I run them without a suspension lift or taller bump stops, yust fit on Disco steels or factory alloys to avoid putting them too far out into the arches or they catch badly.

I camel cut the rear to allow them to tuck up into the rear arches without ruining the body panel further.

If you want to fit them properly do as Mike suggests and get a +2" lift ;) I didn't at the time but probably will now the planned air suspension is being shelved indefinately :(

  8. Still struggling to find the £1100 to upgrade each diff to locked and pegged spec :(

I saw exactly as you described with a 24 spline ARB locker I missed out on, it was bought by a friend who sent it away to be built up into a spare diff, rebuilder said it was completely wore up and had two hairline cracks in the plate the crown wheel bolts to, possibly you had a call? Thing is, every time I see them for sale they're so very close to 3/4 the price of a new one, my friend Luc has had the misfortune of finding his bargain was expensive scrap and no doubt others have had the same misfortune.

  9. Bit thick here, whats the difference between the mls hg and the Elring OEM type?

Having now binned HG No.2 due to postman folding it in half "AGAIN", I will order from a motor factors to collect personally, the last two had what I can only describe as fibre coating around the steel bits that were surrounding the bores.

    Any help with my conundrum?

  10. I'd be interested to see what Ralph's 110 is like with the galactic mileage his has :)

I help out in a garage quite often on my middle of the week day off, few weeks back we had a Range Rover TDV8 in for a blown head gasket, three new pistons later along with new HG all back on the road, never expected to have one in bits personally but when we took the rods out to replace pistons they were over tollerance! This was on a dealer serviced car with 145,000 kilometers so 90,000 ish miles, in the book the owner had the 700euro bill for the remap @ 60,000 kms, Erik and I both think the remap hold direct resposibility for the early expiration of the engine, not even a full 100,000 kms on the remap! Direct comparisson to the 2.7 Range Rover Sport that had 410,000 kms on it and on std map, pistons still good, bottom end very much border line but within limits, that was also in for HG and owner asked to have crank checked after hearing a horror story of a snapped crank shaft.

Pays your money an takes your chances an all that ;)

All said and done it's a hobby motor and not his daily so most likely it'll be minimal miles and road work will be easy going by the sounds of it?

I replaced my turbo in the summer an after much talking with different people, I followed the advice of folk who were not looking to sell me something and had mechanical sympathy and knowledge, put very simply to me "it's not a Range Rover Sport so stop expecting it to transform into one, and if you want vastly improved performance, start with a better engine and take everything from the filler neck to the tarmac into account", it is a given that I still don't fully comprehend the advice but I understood enough to buy a standard fully reconditioned turbo and be done with it. Perv(Ash) has a different vehicle and different expectations of it so, I look forward to seeing where this goes.

  11. Something ash hasn't pointed out is A. This set up is in his 88" bowler thus it's quite a bit lighter so can pull the gearing. & B. He used to work as a diesel engineer at a diesel specialist. So he does know his way round diesel engine/pump.

    Mike

I disagree on gearing Mike! Now some back ground is coloured in I think 4.1 diffs, still think 3.54 too high for 200Tdi power train out of a Disco with the raise in gearing from the tyres!

My own Disco on std 235/70 16 tyres is plenty quick enough without running out of gears until I hit 80mph, I find even the 235/85 a tadje too tall for my own driving style, others just say wind the pump up and give it higher boost, 15psi at manifold(post intercooler) and just enough smoke to make me think twice about flooring it when blue lights are within good eyesight is enough for me.

Maybe if I take a eurobox in the new year then perhaps a full rebuild is on the cards?

  12. Crumbs, I first read it as a technical excise in turbo upgrading.

Leave turbo alone, fit some 4.7 ring an pinions to get rid of that 13.5% increase in gearing your tyres have put in.

yes that's right, 13.5% increase in gearing from tyre size and then add the rest for rolling resistance etc, when we go laning I run 16/18 psi, this is optimum for traction and ground impact, but horrendous on fuel economy as any bits of black top can be really felt against normal 30 pound all round.

Follow the Hobbit!!! Old school head work and gas flowing gives far better driveability, yes it can be either expensive or time consuming, but in this day and age it's not attractive as it's not a bolt on solution like a VNT etc,. ie, no real resale vslue if you break it where as you could put the VNT up for 3/4 of what you paid and sell it same day, performance head might sit for months!

  13. Just the winch!

Bumper was left along with everything else.

Just saw a reply that he didn't take note of serial numbers :( That avenue is lost, its a warn 8274 with a Bow motor and blue plasma rope with yellow hook, if one springs up for sale from a dubious vendor shout me a holla!!!

  14. Think they are, but only fitted to post 92MY 200Tdi as 300Tdi got revamped fuse and relay board under bonnet.

I seem to remember a club member fitting a new set of aftermarket individual fusible links from a motor factors, mounted on a bit of bent plate on the inner wing, he filled them up with vaseline and they've never been any hassle since.

Not sure if I can find something similar?

  15. Going to share this here too as a good few NL forumers here and just in case it finds it's way to the UK too!

    https://m.facebook.com/groups/144267379068375?view=permalink&id=515796588582117&ref=m_notif&notif_t=group_comment_reply

I'm not familiar with the winch or motor so don't know if there are traceable serial numbers? Anyone know?

Not just Defenders being targeted but the lucrative accessories as this is the second one I've seen lately :(

  16. Feel your pain, or should I say "felt"?

Changing a front prop on a mates Disco, he has a worse back than me so it made sense to lend a hand but really not fun on gravel drive with no ramps or axle stands to get it higher, made worse by it still sitting on 205x16 tyres :( But it did prove the diet was working as I could still slide in underneath it lol.

sorry to hear you're still not fully mended yet Jeff :(

  17. I tried to do a 4 person buy on the 52 inch bar some months back on a Dutch forum, response was less than enthusiastic, think they thought the bar too big? Price was certainly 10% per unit cheaper, the supplier in China was still happy to ship just one but I couldn't spare the cash after two months trying the group buy my partner was made redundant and circumstances changed so I didn't buy then, she's back in work and savings back up to level and I would like to try again! I was going to post it up on here but posting to UK isn't appealing when I could drive round and deliver them personally here in NL. Although I was rather put off by the customs bill from the two smaller light bars :o

Off to look at the Duane pages in English.

  18. Budget, time schedule, actual aim in building your project car.

Space is something very much under estimated in any type of garage/workshop build, tidy mind and work ethics are a must!!!

There are three limiting factors, all of these apply to building project vehicles.

    Time.

    Money.

    Imagination.

I started my D1 200Tdi rebuild with a 3500 budget to get him back on the road within 8 months, reality it turned into 18 months and almost 6500 buy the time we were on the road, currently its a 10,500+ hobby vehicle and all within 3yrs!!! Although it looks and drives much like a bog standard 200Tdi Disco, it is an expensive hobby when you add it all up!

Full on restoration, ground up rebuilds cost mega, consume endless days and it takes a lot of effort to keep motivated. Running restorations are easier going as essentially you only bite off as much as you can chew before you want to use it again, much more paletable in terms of maintaining motivation to keep it going as you should be enjoying it as well, not just getting frustrated at a pile of rusty bits of this, bits of that strewn across the garage.

Skills, do you have any? Engine rebuilds cost big bucks not for parts so much but the time involved in doing them, same with gearboxes and transfer boxes, older Defs are mostly worn out long before you bought it, budgeting a rebuilt power and drive train is a very sensible thing to do, easier when its in bits to remove and refit ;)

Axles etc are also worthy points as lots of folk want to upgrade, lockers etc are always on the want list, but a good 4 pin diff upgrade and new bearings an seals is always a worthy starting point.

Before you even buy your project, first pop into staples, get the biggest white board they have and a box of markers, write out your goals, budgets and time line, be sure to have a clear view of what vehicle you want to build, expedition, camper, off roader, general hack or concours show stopper, then write it out and go from there.

  19. My biggest pet hate is when you order an item listed in the UK and it turns up weeks later from China! I'm currently the victim of this with an item which said Birmingham and weeks later I've received an email from Royal Mail asking for a duty payment 4x what the item cost in the first place! I told Royal mail they could keep it and asked PayPal for a Refund!

Post.nl have 2X 11 inch LED lightbars in their warehouse that I ordered from a supplier out of Rotterdam, you pay the post man here for the customs duty, a 235 euro order turned into a 560 euro order with customs charges, good job I was in the yard when they came or it would have been paid and I would have to pay my boss the money back! Very poor service from vendor with an angry email exchange, where I stated that I was not made aware of customs charges for items sold within the EU! Paid by credit card and they are dealing with it but I got my money back.

Lesson learned there! But I did want to but never did start a thread on the costs of buying direct from China. Anyone know the full implications and potential costs? I was looking for a 52 inch curved combi light bar for the roof for when we do the 24hrs Brabant roadbook, forrest tracks in the dark can be "INTERESTING" or trecherous!
