  1. hello, maybe lashing two tyres together with a length of rope slung over the landy would suffice...seems to work on tugboats, mind you, cant remember seeing many trees in the sea.. cheers...
  2. hello, getting locked out of a freelander is a good thing isnt it !! cheers...
  3. hello, maybe scrap the whole printed magazine, shiny bolt on bits and hundreds of ads, and have it all online instead !! mind you difflock does that :-) i subscribed to lre after i bought my defender, but i have leant alot from the old forum, manuals, and generaly talking to people, and find that it now takes about 10 mins to read the whole magazine, as i find most of it useless for my tastes, and wont be re-subscribing, after saying that, the magazine does try to cater for alot of differant tastes, winching events, shows, bling, tricked up landrovers, older vehicle info, military articles, and some tech stuff. but alas lre cant please everybody all the time. 100+ pages of ads isnt a selling point in my opinion cheers...
  4. hello, what freq does standard tv operate on ? ( standard bbc, itv, channel 4 ) cheers...
  5. hello, cheers for the info, didnt realise paddocks did longer arms, i will check the magazines and website after work. cheers...
  6. hello, i just looked at the photo's.. then the post header.."ex mod split doors" just a note, the door tops are series as opposed to military ones, the only reason i mention this is that i posted the military part numbers on the previous lre forum for the military door tops, which are differant to the series ones. if anybody wrote these down, they may differ from the serie's part numbers, i know the main seal between the door top and door bottom is differant, but thats not to say the parts cannot be used with either mil or series. cheers...
  7. hello, enamel is a tough paint, but it can chip easily, i painted my defender with sand army paint, and used enamel on the chequer plate bits and pieces, the army paint once its dryed properly, is very hard wearing. i used a furry roller to apply my paint, which has the added bonus of leaving the defender soft and fluffy, for those cold winter nights.... cheers...
  8. hello, in reality i wouldnt, but i couldnt think of another tv program !! cheers...
  9. hello, the ldvs we have at work, unfortunatly dont have long mirror arms, and we have both the new model and the older ones, dont know about the lutons and pickups though :-) thank you for the part numbers. cheers...
  10. hello, it got me thinking when i saw a black and white portable tv in a secondhand shop, and it had the small loop arial attatched, but i guess that they must have some sort of amplifier in the tv circuit board. maybe i could run coils of copper wire round and round the landy until emmerdale tunes in ! cheers...
  11. hello, am i right in thinking the mirror arms are longer than a standard defender one ? does anybody know how much further it sticks out compared to a standard one ? and does anybody have a part number ? just thought they would be better fitted for towing a caravan etc. cheers...
  12. hello, i have the military ( or early 90/110 ) alloy door tops fitted to standard s3 door bottoms. i painted everything with zinc primer, then applyed waxoil to all the interior surfaces, fitted polystyrene to the inside of the door bottom, then bought a sheet of 8x4 3mm ally and cut out the panels to fit, drilled and riveted them on. i have enough ally left to cover the inside of the rear door as well. i aquired some ally door handles of a series vehicle, and turned them upside down, sat in the drivers/passengers seat and fitted them accordingly, and after covering 4000 miles across spain, the drivers side is positioned perfect as an arm rest ! the only thing i intend to fit on the doors themselves is probaly a small elasticated map pocket. i didnt bother with the anti burst locks and strikers etc, i found the early slam type less obtrusive. the guy i got my alloy door tops off, had/has a set on an early 90/110, the door bottoms are knacked but the tops look fine. if anybody is looking for some alloy door tops ( twin sliding windows) then give "teasdale landrovers" a ring and ask for steven or david young. teasdales telephone number is : 01833660410 teasdale bought the new parts dept, but stephen and david still run the secondhand stuff. cheers...
  13. hello, yes i know, but i thought i might as well end the post on a lighter note, after all, this leaning stuff is supposed to be fun cheers...
  14. hello, i think i will simply place the jerry cans and water container over the back axle, and wait a couple of years for spring sag to take its course ! :-) cheers...
  15. hello, after speaking to various gearbox type people, ashcrofts included, not all lt 77 gearboxs are the same, mine, as it turns out isnt a standard 200 tdi box, is a pre tdi unit, i.e 90/110 not defender, and the gear ratios are differant. so anybody embarking on any gear ratios changes etc, make sure you have the serial number in front of you, and dont assume you have the correct box simply because its an lt77, somebody may have swapped it. in my case i am going to fit military 1st and 2nd gear ratios, which solves the towing problem, 3rd is fine as it is, 4th you cant change as its 1.1 (one to one) and i can drop 5th slighly. now all i have to do is plan the route to italy ! thank you for all the replies and advice. cheers...
  16. hello, priced up a load leveller from a breakers....£200 secondhand or £600+ new !!! but after much ringing round, scorpion can make some for about £50 each, to whatever spring rate i require. cheers...
  17. hello, after wondering why my rear suspension always seemed hard when empty, and then when i went to spain fully loaded, and the suspension didnt move much, got me looking at the spring colours, which are as follows : drivers side rear : red/red passengers side rear : green/red on a quick search i came across the following spring rates for a 110 : NRC6904 110 HD Rear passenger side 15.55 330 8 red/green NRC6389 110 HD Rear driver side 16.02 330 8 red/red however, i dont want heavy duty springs on the rear, just standard ones. i dont have a self leveling unit fitted, which part numbers do i need ? i looked in my parts cat, but it only shows the hd ones, with exception to the ones fitted with the self leveling unit, which i dont have ? ( see below ) NRC6388 D110 with load leveler Rear passenger side 16.53 180 7.5 blue/blue NRC7000 D110 with load leveler Rear drivers side 15.75 180 7.5 green/white the 330 springs are far to hard, as it bounces quite hard on small pot holes, ruts etc. so i am presuming that the 180's would be more suitable ? i have checked the front springs, and they are as they should be. drivers side : white/white passenger side: yellow/yellow cheers...
  18. hello all, thank you for all the replies and options. i am sure i will find the compromise i seek..somewhere ! cheers...
  19. hello, yes your right that the disco transfer box is 1.2 as opposed to the 1.4 in the defender, i didnt really want to go faster,( my standard defender transfer box propelled me over the speeds limits !) most of the countries i have/am visiting have speed limits similair to the uk, and i have seen the results of some of these clowns in big japanese 4x4's hulterling down roads with caravans/trailers, going far to fast, not good ! as for fitting one to a n/a 2.5 diesel, i cant help really, my original tyres were 7.50x16, but they needed replacing anyway, so i bought the 235/85s which lifted the gearing very very slightly. i have spoken to several people reguarding overdrives..but at a £1000 i can have a gearbox built ! cheers...
  20. hello, could wing mounted military whip type ariels be used to recieve a tv signal for a 12 volt tv/radio i have in the defender ? i dont really want to fit a caravan type ariel to the roof, or the wing ! but just a passing thought... or maybe there is something else i could fit, which would do the job, the tv has a radio built in as well.. cheers...
  21. hello, after fitting a discovery transfer box to my standard 110 defender, and after covering 4000 miles across spain and france, i have come to the conclusion that i need to claw back aroud half a gear ! at present i have 235/85/16 all terrain tyres fitted, i am hoping that if i simply fit 235/70/16 tyres this may achieve my goal ? as i need a recon gearbox and recon transfer box anyway, would i be better keeping the taller tyres and altering the transfer box ratios instead ? my present setup is fantastic on frances long flat roads, and its fine on the spainish roads, but any hills and mountainous regions see me changing gear alot,( not towing ) and i am now planning a trip to italy, but this time towing a caravan, and i know that the present setup, will have my slipping the clutch just to set off etc, and thats before i hit the alps ! i really enjoy the reduced engine noise and the taller gearing, and i dont want to fit bigger intercoolers, mess with the pump timing etc, just end up with something between standard defender gearing and the discovery ? maybe having a gearbox built with standard 1st,2nd,3rd gears and then taller top gears would do the trick ? its a minefield and some would probaly say, leave well alone, i dont go serious offroading, but i would like to keep my low box standard, just in case..oh and no overdrives please :-) cheers... 1991 3dr 200tdi defender 110 (called poppy) 1974 s3 airportable (with no name as yet)
