  1. Hi guys, I dont normally venture this side of the website to offen but; I am coming to the uk next month on hols and was considering purchasing a nice tidy discovery 1. Well i am going to need some wheels and a car hire is an option! Unfortunately for the 39 days i am in the uk a 5 seater 1.6 is going to be around £700s! I will on occasions need to have a 7 seater when friends go on outings with us. This will cause all sorts of complications as i am not sure if the hire company would take to kindly to me swapping to a bigger car for outings. (I am also based in a different place to where i will pick up and drop off car). I have been thinking of getting myself a discovery and this seems a viable option now and could add that 700 towards the purchase cost! I am not fussy about looks to much but mainly a solid dependable vehicle would be great. My question is if i were to purchase a disco what do i need to do? I know that i would need some sort of insurance. How do i make it road legal? Could i do this be done in a day or do i need to get things in the post etc. What sort of region of total outlay am i looking at to be legal? Also will the discovery carry 7 people comfortably? Do they have seat belts is the far back? How are they to drive around town? Hard to park? (Although i own a lr out here, it is as no way congested like that of the uk!) If done properly i can see some benifit in going down this route over hire drive but thought i would check the background. I like to see what the experts say first. Thanks for any advice.
  2. Nice work. Pretty fast too! I was waiting to see your results but didnt think it was going to be this quick. I agree about the defender mounts transferring too much vibration also, which is why i am planning to use disco rubber. Could you elaborate on the square tubing you mentioned. I need to make up some brackets for my install and don't have that many disco chassis knocking about! You also suggest it is the better option. How far away from the original mounts did the new mounts go? Does the disco engine mounts have to be vertical? Could they be placed at an angle so they just drop into the angled mounts of the series type? (I have a galvanised chassis that i hope to install a 200tdi). I see Meccano suggests too much float on 200tdi mounts and this was the reason for a change on the 300tdi mounts. Am i correct in thinking that the 300tdi engine mounts wont fit on a 200tdi engine? Look forward to all your thoughts.
  3. Sorry forgot to add post. doh!! http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=24099&hl=
  4. Hi, I assume from your post that you have the dreaded tubular fuse setup!! Prehaps there was volts on the otherside but lack of current flow due to corrision. A quick fix is to roll the fuse in the holder. Check out this post and you will see the mod that i did to my 110. i just got really fed up with removing the fuse box cover with alarming regularity!! I used 2 fuseholders from VWP and with about 2hrs work sorted problem for once and all. It also meant a few extra ccts that could be used for your accessories or as mounts for spare fuses. Was considering adding it as technical archive post but not sure how to do it! Hope this helps, I would definitely recommend this mod. (If you are a competent electrician of course).
  5. hi, A mate of mine has carried out a 200tdi discovery conversion on his original 2.5 Petrol 90. It is such a revelation to drive now! He would like to upgrade the rear axle to discs and we have found a friend with an old range rover axle. Only problem is that it has no diff or axle shafts. My question is this; Can we fit the drum brake diff and axle shafts to the range rover axle? Is shafts of correct length/both pattern? Will i have to use range rover axle shafts? If so will it work with the 90 diff? In the future would 90 discs and pads fit or will we have to order range rover parts? I am sure many of you have done the swap but this is slightly different and would like your advice/thoughts. Cheers. Look forward to your responses.
  6. Still may be interested in whole box. Keep me updated on progress! Cheers.
  7. Hi, I would be very much interested in the R380 short bellhousing and input shaft if you are thinking of swapping to a long shaft/bellhousing. Let me know your plans. Cheers.
  8. I would think if you were to intend fitting the powersteering pump later it would be worth looking into the VW pulley option. From what i am aware it is just a matter of fitting the pulley end of an old VW pulley. It has an extension on it. That way it doesnt require too much modification/disassembly to put back to standard. Pic borrowed from eblag attatched. I am sure there is another thread on here that deals with the mod better. The LRO doesnt show an pics of the intercooler installation, just mentions it! I saw a few rover type on eblag (as well as 300tdi versions) and seem to be going for good prices. Cheers.
  9. Hi guys, This is what i did to mine! Fed up taking cover off every few weeks. I bought two fuse holders from the great VWP and instaled them in the standard position. Required about 1mm of filing to fit fuse holder in slot, abit of bending of bottom lip and four screws drilled. A good crimping tool (not old cheapo in the kits!) and a few lucar terminals and bobs your uncle. Took about an hour and a nice finish i think! I do believe it is FBB8U. £3.95 They are 8 way so spare 2 fuses on each block for your accessories?? Pretty much fit and forget! more than what i can say for the original. Cheers.
  10. Hi, I see some people use a VW pulley on the alternator to get the alternator to line up with the crank and waterpump. Then find a longer belt to connect all three up. I had been looking at something on the web but unfortunately forgot were it was! Have you had a thought about using a 300tdi intercooler? It has both outlets on the left side. LROs lightweight article used an intercooler from a rover car. Just a few thoughts. did you have a look at this? http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=9468&hl= This guy used an lower alternator mount like the series engines; http://www.s2cforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=12550.150 I have included a pic of original disco layout if you cant remember! I am sure Les knows more about this then myself but i hope this helps. Let us know how you get on. (I am looking to install a disco tdi in my lightwieght hybrid) Cheers.
  11. Hi, I take your point. My chassis is galvanised also. But on idle the engine, on 4cyl mounts, vibration is a bit hard to bear. I am removing a V8 on an auto box. Do you think that i could use the original V8 engine mounts? I know that there are a few positions that the 4cyl engine mounts could be bolted on to the 200 engine. If not, i would probably have to move/remove them anyways. Your thoughts, Thanks.
  12. Hi Guys, As you may have gathered i am embarking on a discovery 200tdi/LT77/R380 transplant. I plan to use the 200 discovery engine mounts, as opposed to the usual 90/110 4cyl mounts. I realise that the 4cyl would be easier but i am hoping that by using the discovery mounts it would reduce vibration! Any one got access to a discovery chassis with no engine so as to take a pic? Les seems to think that the 200 mounts are slightly different to 300. Maybe i could go the whole hog and fit 300 engine mounts? Maybe i should add a link to the discovery or wanted forum. How do i do that?? Any thoughts? Thanks.
  13. hi did your mate convert the LT77S or you meant the plural of LT77? Do you know the details? If not, have any you guys converted a V8 box LT77S to short bellhousing, I remember somebody saying that it would require the box to be stripped internally. Yes i am using the LR on ASI, with taxes and oil prices have finally hit, so swapping to Tdi. Also future petrol deliveries seem in doubt! What gearbox do you have available? A brief description would be great. By the way whereabouts are you located? What was the nature of your business on ASI? Cheers.
  14. Hi Western, Are you saying that a LT77 short bellhousing would fit on to a R380? If so where can i get a R380 short input shaft? Thanks.
  15. hi, I am looking to fit a disco 200tdi engine to my lightweight hybrid and am planning on using a 4cyl short bellhousing 5 speed box. I have yet to find a box and was looking to fit a 4cyl LT77 but see that some people have hinted that there is a stronger R380 available. I have heard a few reports that the LT77 is fairly fragile. Could a 300tdi R380 (long bellhousing) be converted to a short bellhousing configuration? This would be purely down to the fact that them seem to be more available! Or is this a proper no no and better to stick with the LT77? Oh and my friend has a gearbox that looks like a LT77 centre. (LDV bus) Could that be utilised to repair a broken 4cyl 5speed box? Any thoughts. Thanks.
  16. Thanks for all the info guys. Pics very helpful also. Cheers.
  17. Hi, Does the td5/300 pedal come with the specail atatchment that suppose to make the clutch effort easier? My friends one doesnt always come out and the clutch stays on!! I prefer the direct old type for this reason! Can you confirm? Thanks.
  18. Hi, Just out of interest, what is the difference between the pedal box on a td5 and earlier? Could a td5 pedal box be adapted to use on a earlier LR? I have a new earlier master cylinder, so could this be easily swapped to make it compatible? (I am converting from auto to manual). Setup is for 200tdi Lt77 4cylnder box. Otherwise i am interested as above in a clutch system for early LR. This being pedal box, and metal pipe/fittings. I plan to fit a new m/c and flexible hose. Any thoughts?
  19. Hi Les, I am interested in your chassis mounts. I am planning on fitting a 200 disco into my lightweight and would prefer to fit the original disco rubbers. (I know most people fit the 90/110 mounts but i want to reduce engine vibration). Is the 300 mounts the same as the 200 disco? Are they quite heavy? Could you post to a uk address? What would i be looking at for them? Cheers.
  20. hi tjolliffe, Do you know if this is a specail part or standard landrover part? Is it exclusive to Turners or could you buy it from any LR dealer? I have used the same on my disco engine but something has suddenly gone amiss so i need a new one! I also bought a 2.5 NAD turner head prior to transplant and transfered this sensor over but unfortunately lost the paperwork/details. By the way the sender i have has the black plastic surround and the meter i am using is a PRC3105. (What meter do you have fitted). It would be great if you had the part no: Thanks.
  21. Thanks for that. Very informative. Something for me to ponder over. M
  22. hi, What have you come up with? I am struggling with the same dilemma. I have a subwoofer in the back but struggling for ideas on where to put the high end speakers. Was thinking of getting a component pair. (woofer and separate tweeter). Putting the woofer in the seatbox by my feet, firing into the footwells, and the tweeters on the dash somewhere. By the way i havent used the factory stereo mount as i think they are yucky. I have cut a slot on the middle of the dash where the clock/cigarette lighter etc goes. That way the cd player is horizontal. Requires a bit of a fiddle but hopefully will look nice and tidy! Only problem i can see is the gearlever is in the way when changing cds! Look forward to an update/ Cheers.
  23. Hi Guys, I was looking into purchasing a td5 bulkhead to replace a mates 2.5 NA diesel bh. I believe there are a few mods that you need to do to make it fit. Any ideas what? I am looking at JC surplus who is selling for 300. Where did you see them for 200? What are the quality of them? See some replacements from paddocks and the like for 205. Surely these are not genuine LR? Anyone tried these? What sort of quality are they? Dont want to go through all the trouble of shipping, removing and replacement with metal that is substandard! If not very good quality/shape, maybe better to either repair the old one or purchase a used genuine one. Your thoughts! By the way one of my landrovers is a rolling restoration, not that i bought it with that in mind!! It probably would have been easier for me to start from scratch as i seem to be replacing or modifying almost every part of the landy slowly but surely. Cheers.
  24. Seems to point to hazard switch to me. The indicators are routed through the hazard switch so it may not be making a through contact when not in use. Just an idea.
  25. Hi Edf, hope you enjoyed the tour! Did you check out our Scouts webpage. Bit outdated but interesting i think! We had a 109 for a long time but now have upgraded to a 110. Still have fond memories of the 109 though. Series Rovers are like that i guess. If interested my mate sells videoes of the island. I have bodged my gearing issue until i finish my next project! I hope to run 285/75 16 tyres that a mate sold me for a good price. Unfortunately i dont have any rims to take that size and so have to order them in. Wont arrive until the new year! In the meantime i am enjoying the acceleration and keeping to the speed limit. Looking towards my 110 i was entertaining the thought of fitting britparts +40mm 90 rear springs to the front of my 110. Despite being marketed as +40 they are infact only approx 11mm taller than 90 HD and are approx same rating. Hopefully this will lift the front up a bit and allow for the bigger tyre. This would also level it up a bit as the 110 is rear high. Anyone tried this? I am not too bothered by the HD spring rate that much.
