  1. Hello good people , I am getting to grips now with my Discovery ,after repeatedly cleaning and scrubbing carpets and seats AND still havind the smell of Dog in the car ,I decided enough is enough ,so armed with a Stanley knife I proceded to remove the rear footwell carpet and padding ,this progressed into removing the front carpets and padding ( read sound proofing ).All this alone must weigh in at 50kg, plus the water content. All the carpets and padding are now in another rusty box this time it is a council skip ( ho ho ).But unfortunaately ,I have unearthed lots of other holes ,foot wells front ,seat belt points ( for fnt seat /s) more on the rear wheel arch . These probs will have to be looked on as an on going task , luckily I have founnd a good man with a welder .Question ,should the metal be cut away to a nice solid piece before the new piece is welded in and should the metal /s be painted before they are covered up , if so then I can do this and save my man some time and grief ( and me some dosh ). I also need the offside cill/s the near side looks good ( it may have been replaced at some time ) the arches are both shot . Does anyone have suggestions for a reasonable supplier or suggestions as to how to do D.I.Y ,I can borrow a welder and learn .I shall try and attach some pics .I eaagerly await your ressponse PLEASE .coachman
  2. Hello again fellow Discovery people , my Discovery is a 300tdi automatic and my son says it is sluggish ,I drive steady so it does not bother bme ,what is interesting is the varying comments on the lift pump ,how do you detect a fault , is it a strip down or how ? Could it cause the vehicle to be sluggish ? I took the advise of putting /mixing 2 t oil with the diesel ,it can`t do any harm after all . What are the other components mentioned ,I do not understand abreviations ,please enlighten . The learned among our group tell me that I should have central locking , well on cleaning down the car I removed the rear door panel and found a gismo ,does this ( photo )indicate a `yes you do` other photo`s show the extent of a dog loving Discovery . I have had to remove and bin my carpets and insulation ,that alone weighed of at 50kg, but I am getting there .Coachman
  3. What pipe did you use for a replacement ,was it home made or was it bought .coachman
  4. Good evening everyone , the input on headlining rejuvination looks pretty complete , BUT HOW does the lining come out ,mine is from a Dicovery 1 5 dr with no sun roof/s. I am about to e-mail the company Woolies about their products ,your input `please` and theirs should do the trick . coachman
  5. Thank you Peterdon ,Teabag and friends I will look into this later . coachman
  6. Thank you Orgasmic farmer , have you any other snippits of Discovery information worthwhile passing on ,eg ,how do you fix a stuck diff lock lever . Have you any cottages for rent . coachman
  7. Hello Sharpy , I have recently `joined ` this band of men/women and I find the input stimulating . I bought a Freelander td4 3dr `s`7 yrs ago , it has cost me a battery and a brake calliper, probably because I called my local garage to fix one wintry morning ( I shall not forget ). Re your query of the yellow gear stick mounted yellow button ,this as I am sure you know by now is the H.D.C ( Hill Decent Control ) this is applied when going down steep hills slowly ,it is engaged and you just steer ,the cars`brain`( traction control )takes over and you just steer in as straight a line as poss. The car will be braked as and when needed ,not by the driver but by the traction control ,when on the level the H.D.C can be disengsged and you carry on . I have taken my Freelander on routes /tracks that I would not expect to take a J.C.B and the car performed impecably ,Old Coach Road , Cannon Chase and others ,much to the chagrin of `proper` land rover owners . It is a lovely car ,it returns on a run 45 mpg ,the tyres are £40 ish ,the engine is a 2 litre chain driven B.M.W.Your wife will have fun and NEVER bet your ninety against the Freelander in a fair fight !!!. coachman
  8. What an interesting outcome I am impressed ,and so thorough I just wish I was confident enough to do the work ,I may try when the weather picks up . The only other conversion I now of is a Freelander club member in Norfolk who used an `interference fit`bulb with holder fitted into the fog light housing . The rear light configuration on the Freelander 1 ( 01 )to say the least leaves something to be desired .Why can`t British manufacturers get it right from the start ,another example are the tail light variations on the Dicovery 1 vehicles .coachman
  9. Hello again , after I had my new rear floor fitted ( and cleaned the interior of rust /dust ) I decided to give the car a good wash . What I supprisingly found is that the exterior body panels doors etc are ally, is this normal I thought they were made of steel . It is becoming a tall learning curve this Discovery ownership . Thankyou coachman
  10. Hello again ( and so soon ) while I am on the forum a question needs to be answered or clarified. This Discovery I have bought is locked and unlocked witha key as opposed to a button . I accepted this as correct ,after all it is 18 yrs old , while having my rear floor replaced the fact ! arrose that it maybe ( conflickting english )could have defunct central locking . Does anyone now /can verify whether a 1-6-94 Discovery 300tdi should /could have central locking .thankyou coachman
  11. I took your advice gentlemen and had the job done. The job in question was a new boot /rear floor to my Discovery 300tdi ,Simon services at Warmfield Normanton West Yorkshire ( Tony ) did the work and made good a few little rough edges too . The rear of the vehicle is now as good as new, ready for refitting the newly cleaned seats and carpets . I had the opportunity to look under the vehicle before commiting it to surgery and was quite taken aback as to how good the chassis was ( a pity the body is not )still it will be an ongoing thing ,something to keep me out of the pub eh ! Thank you again gents ,all I need to do now is find and clean up my old spanners and grease gun ,getting under this vehicle should be a bit easier although I shall have to pick my moments .
  12. thank you SPendry, all information is greatly received .coachman
  13. Greetings , please ,to save me trawling through all these words of varying wisdom ,is there somewhere a service schedule for the Discovery 300Tdi or can I down load it , or should I buy the Haynes manual and completely confuse myself , thankyou ,coachman .
  14. I think £18 a roll is far too much ( 500 grm green spool ) go to PlumbCentre or any good plumbers merchant and ask for `green spool`, I may be one of very few plumbers still with a stick of grade `D` in his tool box .coachman
  15. Hello again OVAL brethren , I am in a bit of a quandry ,the diff lock on my 94 auto Discovery is siezed up ( so I am told ) what are the chances of getting stuck if I took it `green laning ` and encountered some ,forbid the stuff, MUD ,I am used to my Freelander s brain working it out and I just drive .but I am `new`to a `proper Land Rover` . Would the vehicle get stuck or would it drive out ,I don`t know ,has any one out there come across this problem ,further more have you any advise to give to a novice . I once took my Freelander Td4 ( 2001 type )on a Freelander club green laning day ,we went on tracks I would not have taken a JCB,and seeing as the car was a `shiny` I was very apprehensive anyway all went well and all tracks ( rock strewn passes) were dealt with with much ability from this Freelander , the day finished of by driving the `coach road ` north of Grasmere and south of Threkeld ( I should have put this on a Freelander page ,ah well .coachman .
  16. Using 2Tis a new one on me ,but I have and in fact do use 1/2 gallon of engine oil mixed with 1/2 gallon of diesel ( prior to putting in tank ).The theory being that mechanical parts work better with a bit of lube , and fuel pumps need all the help available plus valves etc ( cyl head ) my theory/ practices were implemented a long time ago ,before anybody started messing about with fancy inhibitors or before the removal of lead from petrol ( it works the same in a petrol engine ) per half tank full.coachman
  17. This forum is absolutely amazing ,a veritable holy grail `. My recently purchased Discovery 300tdi has a saggy roof lining ,I have been put of dealing with this due to horror stories etc ,untill now . Please ,how would I remove the none sunroof headlining and how would I repair /refit ,also the idea of a colour change or even the same colour interests me ,please do tell .coachman
  18. Hello Godzilla (and unfortunately I have met a few while wearing my bear goggles ,) You do sir seem to have an easily sorted problem ,First check your thermostat , no ,sod it buy a new one froma good sourceanddonotbe fobbedh `do you want a summer or winter one ` fit the new one with a new gasket and goo, secondly you could remove the viscous fan and run with a `half radiator blind ( but watch the temperature ) if the temp rises too much then dispense with the blind . thirdly ,when budgets permit fit an electric fan , if your not `handy` then fit a kenlowe as there will be all the bits ,or go to a reckers and buy a used one (from a choice of many vehicles )
  19. Thank you Biffo , I indeed have a good friend nicknamed Biff ,he is very choosy as to who uses this psuedonim ,he is a gentle giant really . Moving on , is there a service schedule on this forum please ,as I would like to bring this vehicle up to service standard a.s.a.p is there a preference for parts supplier ,are Brookwells anygood ?I have been `window`shopping the websites and there are quite a lot of `suppliers`,what are your observations re cost of the new floor ( anybody ) £240+vat inc floor panel . coachman .
  20. Thankyou Davy and fellow green oval people , the Discovery is supposed to be a 300tdi reistered in 1-6-94 automatic . I have had a quote from a Land Rover privateer garage of £240 +vat is this considered reasonable , the LRman told me the diff lock lever had seized and his men would free it up while doing the floor ( I thought nice man ) I have also been looking at panel suppliers and aren`t there lots . I am at the mercy of others as I cant bend as much as I used to ,so I may have to accept what comes up . One saving grace is that I am told the chassis and surrounding `bits` is in quite good order . Further question I must ask ,at what stage and what with do you service the front drive ( big shiny balls )turning assembly .I think /know that I will enjoy this forum ,thankyou coachman .
  21. Hello fellow minded person ,try Morrisons ,they sre selling 2x4ltrs for £4 offer ( Rothwell Nr Leeds ) I have also run my Freelander td4 on central heating oil ,I first aked the question of the different explosive temperatures between central heating oil and diesel and the central heating oil has a lower temperature there fore by my reckonoing i WOULD NOT DAMAGE THE ENGINE BY TOO HIGH AN OPERATING TEMP . I also have /do use veg oil but as a mix with diesel ( my test method was to put 2 samples in large glass jars and watch the flow charectoristics in different btemperatures and then to mix 50/50 and watch the same , I found there to be no differences ,but not being a scientist I may be wrong ,all I know is that it worked for me ) ( foot note )maybe but poor men have poor ways sayeth Mr Lawson .
  22. Hello everyone ,I am new to the green oval world so bear with me please , I bought ( last week ) a Discovery 300 tdi 94 model ,I found it strange having to unlock /lock doors with a key , although I do remember those halicon days . The car ( Discovery )( do we call them cars !) had previosly been used as a dog taxi ( x4)so I have had quite a cleaning job ,(does anyone know a priority cleanser ), as I became more used to my `new`car I decided to clean the rear by taking out the rear carpet ( and sound deadening mat ) .I can hear you all saying OH NO, and you were correct, the boot floor is rusted through inparts ( very big parts ) I know that I should have looked but I trusted the Garage . Does anyone have any CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions PLEASE . A further problem I have encountered is ,how do I select the DIFF LOCK , is it selected on the move or do I stop the car ,at the moment the selector refuses to move except between high low box .Could it have seized through misuse or lack of use . The gearbox is an automatic ,are there any problems with this ? .Are there any greenlaning clubs in my area Wakefield West Yorkshire . Thankyou coachman .
