  1. Bump - anyone with a 101 that has power steering?
  2. 4.6 crank and conrods in a 4.0 block and main caps.
  3. The RRC, Defender and Discovery units can all fit outside the chassis but the output shaft housing is too long and results in having to cut the chassis to make room for it - the drop arm is then on the inside of the chassis. I thought P38 boxes had to be installed in the same manner. Cheers Garry
  4. I understand that the 4.2 is a stroked 3.5/3.9 block where the 4.0 block (while the same capacity as the 3.9) is a beefier block to take the larger diameter crankshaft of the 4.0/4.6 and as such amongst other things, has the 4 bolt mains. Will drilling the mains of the 4.2 main bearing caps weaken them? Garry
  5. Thanks - I assume the Jeep box is a LHD version on what I have tried - unfortunately a LHD box would be almost impossible to get here to try. By RB44 I assume you are talking about the mil truck that looks like a pumped up VW transporter. Again impossible to get here to try. I am happy to source boxes form elsewhere but I need to do that only with a proven mod. I sourced the RHD Jeep box locally on the off chance that it would work and it did prove the mounting arrangement except the drop arm goes the wrong way. I cannot see any reason why the 101 drop arm could not be modified to work on the Jeep box. Cheers Garry
  6. Has anyone put power steering into their FC 101 that does not involve cutting into the front of the chassis. I know most Disco 1 and 2, P38 and 110 boxes can be used but involve cutting into the chassis. I am not prepared to cut into the chassis - drill holes, weld yes but not cut bits out of it. I have checked a Jeep Wrangler box and it would fit where the original box is without too much modification BUT there is a major issue in that the output shaft turns the wrong way . So if anyone has power steering on their 101 does not involve cutting the chassis please post up how it was done. Thanks Garry
  7. I also started driving at the beginning of the 70s - my first car was a horrid Morris 1300 Auto - that was the most unreliable car I have owned. My FL1 which I owned for 8 years was on par with my RRS as the most reliable car I have owned. My 3.9V8 Disco was not real good but the FL1 was the best - even better when you take into account I bought it with 170,000km on it so a old car when I got it. Garry
  8. FL1 actually started development back in the Honda years (same as the interior and instruments of the D1). The FL1 and the Honda CRV started as the same basic vehicle with different outer body and engines but then parted ways - there are some aspects of the very early FL1s and early CRVs that are common - particularly in the suspension. The L series diesel is the basic engine that later with 5 cylinders and a completely different injection system became the TD5 (no a BMW engine). Garry
  9. Thanks for the responses - I will google the suggested options and see where I end up. Megasquirt is on the list but I would prefer a off the shelf product rather than a "hobby" kit that is hobbled together from bits and bobs and when you have questions you can never get a straight answer or ten different answers to the one question. Also i like the idea of having a local seller who I can go back to if there are issues. Cheers Garry
  10. Other than Megasquirt has any used another aftermarket injection system on their Rover V8. Holly make a nice system as a replacement for Holly carbies but it is mainly for US engines but may fit on a modified Rover inlet manifold. So anyone used this or another non Megasquirt system on their Rover V8. Thanks Garry
  11. Yes messages to Megasquirt V8 go unanswered. If megasquirt is experimental I think I will look elsewhere as I do not want something that is experiential and would prefer something off the shelf. Likewise the prices listed on the mega website seem quite high for something experimental. thanks
  12. Sorry - what is a direct coil drive?? I really do not know much about this - searches just provide a lot of confusion - it a shame there are not dealers around the world where you can go and discuss requirements face to face. Marc when you say MegaJolt Forum - where exactly do you mean - I googled it and came up with about 10 different places. Like wise I have sent a Rover V8 Mega Squirt query to MegaSquirt but I have had no response - it seems there is a lot of information out there but at the same time it is hard to get accurate information. Thanks Garry
  13. Sorry - not Landrover related but this seems to be the best place to get information on MegaJolt etc. The simple question is: Can you get a Megajolt kit suitable for 2 cylinder 4 stroke engines? I have a Haflinger that is fitted with a 123 electronic ignition system that used the old dizzy drive as a crankshaft position sensor but it is providing too much advance to the engine - 47BTDC at 3500rpm when it should be about 30BTDC at those revs. It is just too hard to sort so I am thinking of getting rid of it and going back to the standard dizzy or if available putting a MegaJolt on it. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks Garry
  14. I am slowly building a 4.6 to go into my 101 and have been putting a bit of thought into the exhaust. The standard exhaust manifolds do strangle a bit to produce the the low down torque required on the 3.5. I could just put the old manifolds on the 4.6 but not if I want to maximise its power potential. My research has shown the right hand P38 exhaust manifold will basically fit with minimal modification but the left hand manifold will not fit without cutting the inner top of the chassis. There is a pic of the rh manifold installed, can anyone confirm or deny what I have been told about the lh manifold and ideally got a pic. Thanks Garry
  15. Yes I am looking at alternative positions for an oil filter. I have looked at remote mounts, which are quite expensive and saw this which I have never seen before and am interested if they are still available. Thanks Garry
  16. While looking at Youtube videos on the Rover V8 I came across a video where a guy is putting an early Rover V8 into a MGB. While talking about the timing cover he talks about a swivel type oil filter adaptor - he indicates that they were on the old Buick V8 but the one he has is on a Rover V8. Has anyone used these and any ideas where I might get one. Thanks Garry The vid has been edited to just the relevant section
  17. Salsbury diffs can be shaved to give a bit more clearance.
  18. Thanks for that - currently run 10 BTDC but obvious that changes as revs increase, I will start looking for an EDis 8 for a start and the other stuff later.
  19. Now that has got my attention - so why do you use a Megajolt then, if just looking at the ignition side?
  20. Thanks Nigel - I am just wanting to run carbs at the start to run the engine and cam shaft in and sort other modifications needed to put a different engine in - as well I don't want to be trying to sort these issues as well as injection and ignition issues on a new engine and modified installation. I am not interested in a MegaJolt only system as the engine will be ultimately injected - just not sure whether to go Thor or the earlier system. So I will be looking at the full megasquirt system and only using the ignition side at the start. Once everything is sorted and the engine is running OK on the injection system I will reinstall the LPG side so the megasquirt will have to be able to dual map the igniton and if I go injected gas that side as well. So - the trigger wheel will be the go and EDIS 8 though I hear from other sources these are getting rare even in the States. Maybe it is time for you to update this side of the Megasquirt system. The engine is not build as yet but is not far off so I will be in contact closer to the time when the engine is getting its external bits and pieces fitted. Cheers Garry
  21. Thanks to both of you for your information - sort of highlights not to go away from the basic design of the system. i appreciate you help. Garry
  22. Thanks I am not sure I follow all that but I agree if it is EDIS 8 then that is what I need to get. My main concern if that it is not in the UK I will be driving where if there are issues it would be a short trip to a nearby wrecker. If I had an issue a 1000km from anywhere it would be weeks before I could get another unit hence I would prefer to use gear I could source locally but if it must be edis 8 I would get two. I currently carry around a spare ignition amplyfier in case of issues - if all else fails I can change the dissy in my current engine back to points so I need this sort of backup in the new system. Cheers Garry
  23. Ok - just did a google of Ford EDIS 8 - indicates fitted to the Ford 4.6 V8 - this engine was not sold in Aussie cars - the exception was the fully imported Mustangs of late 90s which were a dismal failure here and virtually none were sold. Our current Ford V8 are the Boss 260 and 300kw Twin Cam 5.4litre V8s which I don't think run EDIS
  24. Yes but Aussie built - Ford V8 vehicles have not been imported for for nearly 50 years - what ford V8 are you talking about? I thought EDIS was too old for our engines but I am not sure. Where can I find a list of engines/vehicles that EDIS was fitted too.
