  1. How could you miss my fully tricked up Disco !!!

Was parked right behind the white 90...

It is red, has Mud tyres.... and even a snorkel :D

May I say that the owner of the white 90 spent 10min polishing the exhaust.... I checked it after... it was really spotless

  2. I think Jim did exactly the right thing....

Wait for some other fool to come along and volunteer !

Now he gets to drive without the hassle of organising

Did you post the details anywhere else Xavier?

Yes, in a sense, he did the right thing to ignore me

regarding posting on the French forums, just waiting for you to post/send me a bit more details... as people will be asking questions, and if no answer the post will die very quickly...

regarding the challenge style, do think about the off-roading culture.... In France, the use of winch is a big NO-NO, if you HAVE to use to winch to get somewhere, it means that the route is just not suitable for any vehicle. French like driving, not pulling vehicles up a cliff...

There is a very old "culture" of trialling around cones with the co-pilot doing the monkey job of balancing the car. Like the motorbike trialling.

The Land Rover people are not very present in the trial competition scene (vehicles are too big).

The hard events (UK style.. with winches) are just starting to appear.

So if you want the French turning up (should be easy as so close to England), please find the right balance.

    cheers

    Xavier

  3. Is it true that you cannot take a Discovery on the channel tunnel train due to it's height?

Sure I read this somewhere, but don't know where now.

I took the Shuttle over 30 times with the Disco + full roof rack !!!

You just go into the high vehicle section.. with buses, van and caravan...

You cannot take a LPG vehicle in the Shuttle

  4. You are comparing winches built for pulling 14k with one that was designed for 8k and that you are then uprating. I wouldn't fancy loading a winch to nearly twice it's design limit either.

but then... if the said 8k winch has had all of its internals reworked... does it still classify as a "8k designed winch" or more like a 10k/12k/14k winch????

One thing for sure the hydro Vs electric war is not limited to this forum. It is the same on the French speaking forums, although the french view of winching is somewhat.... different.... ("winching is BAD...").

Just gave me an idea..... If I mount a Gigglepin or Type R winch on a 4x4 Citroen 2CV, just put a skid plate underneath... forget Simex, heavy LR... the AFC07, MT07, etc trophies will be mine :D:D:D

  5. depends what you want to do with it...

I saw a bright yellow disco with black bonnet and roof that did loog GOOD... but that was an off-roader.

Mine is the standard Rioja Red, with I'm starting to convert the bottom bit to black (wheels, tyres, door bottom black chequer plated..). I've been told it looks good too and not too "flashy"...

  6. Hello all,

I've imported my Tomb Raider 90 from Dubai to Switerland. I've noticed different bits on the Swiss defenders, this plus the all the raised middle fingers about the black smoke makes me think that and figure that I've got to do a little work on my Gulf spec to make it legal here in CH. eventually I will afterall need Swiss Plates.

I've talked to the dealer in Lausanne, but they don't seem all that engaged/interested. Does anyone have advice about where I might find someone who might assit. A big bonus would be the ability to speak English. Also somewhere between Geneva and Lausanne would be best

    Thanks and best,

    Jason

Try to post on the Landmania forum HERE

It's french speaking, but a lot do read/write english and a few of them live round area.

  7. apologies if this has been covered loads of times but searching for tyres gets so many results

whats the largest sensible tyre that will fit under a 200tdi disco, standard, unlifted, dont want to cut bodywork?

largest with standard suspension (in good condition):

    - 245/75*16 (depending on your wheels offset, you may or not have to do a tiny 1in cut at the bottom of the rear arch -cant even see the cut from outside)

    - 215/85*16

    - 700R16 (as the Camel discovery)

  8. hi there am a totally new to the forum. so hello to everyone.

my name is james de val and i'm in the very very early stages of planning an expedition. the ultimate plan is to travel right across the world. using the most land mass. through europe and russia across the baring straight and down through canada and the states to south america then by sea to northern africa. then back through europe.

I know it's in French.. but here is a site of a family who toured round the World with their D110 tdi

  9. I spent last week demonstrating the Volvo XC90 and it was very impressive.

The XC70 is also very good one, about the same clearance (20cm vs 21cm) as the XC90 and bit cheaper.

you can also find some very good second hand ones
