  1. could be icing in the intake trumpets (i take it you do still have some fitted). whem the air enters the trumpets, it's speed increases as it is gulped in, this makes it cool even further, and then ice forms, resulting in restricted air flow, over rich mixture (possibly) and loss of power.

mate of mine used to experience similar power loss symptoms on his zzr600 bike a few years ago (the one with the srad system) whenever he hit 150mph  in cold weather, the trumpets would freeze causing power loss.

could be totally wrong, but it's possible in theis weather, especially if all readings are saying normal....

  2. i've had a vapour idea for a freelander  it involves finding one with a knackered k series, and transplanting the vvc engine from an mgf/rover 218 gti into it. not sure on the standard freelander power levels in 1.8 form, but the vvc motor chucks out 143bhp standard which shoudl pep up the performance a bit, and a few tweeks could improve it even further.

so what do you reckon oh wise ones? worth a try, or has it been done?

  3. My bro is after some better tyres for the winter for his D2. At the moment he has the standard fit alloys (IIRC 17" or possibly 18") on his 04 plate td5. Now am i right in thinking that he can go for a set of 16" steels (or alloys) and fit a set of good winter tyres in a higher profile?

this is all new to me, as my 300 was easy to sort out.

  4. what colour is the smoke should be the first question?

if it's a blue/white ish colour, then it sounds like the same symptoms as i had last year, turbo seals are on the way out :( when left to stand and go cold, the seals shrink, letting oil through, when left to idle for a few minutes it will give a lot of smoke when you drive off, as the oil exits the exhaust.

turbo rebuild would be the simplest option (if it is that) try A R Turbos they were recommended to me by another forum member, and quoted a reasonable price for an inspection and rebuild, which if memory serves was about half the cost of a new turbo.

  5. i know this is probably a long shot, but what about the injectors? what condition are they in? if they are quite old you may not be getting a full spray pattern under heavy throttle leading to the conditions you are experiencing.

another shot in the dark would be to make sure that all the hoses are connected the right way round, i know it sounds silly, but i've known proffessional "mechanics" reconnect a coolant hose in the wrong place, and even pinch them sometimes, leading to cooling problems.

  6. Now, i know this has been covered several times in the past, and i've tried the search function as well :)

I have already discovered that it's a dash out job to replace the heater matrix, but once that's out, can it be replaced without removing the heater from the vehicle? Main reason being that i only had the air con regassed this year, and don't really want to have it discharged just yet.

    it's a 94 300 tdi with air con and airbags too :(

  7. the big intercooler will fit on front of the air con rad (mine does :) )

for now i'd put it all back together as standard, but, fit the new cooler in place. then run it for a week or two until everything is settled in, then just swap the intercooler hoses over, and adjust the fueling to suit

  8. as i have only quickly glanced through this again just now, have you changed the temp sender? and are you sure the water pump is ok? even though it still turns, it may not be pumping enough coolant.

i would edge on the side of caution and get some cooling system flush in it, back flush the heater matrix and rad and then refill with a good 50/50 mix of coolant.
