  1. I drive a '92 grey disco 200tdi. You may have seen it on axle stands on Abingdon rd (RAF estate). I don't recall ever being waved at(but i'm dosey bugger!). I think you may live next door to my daughters friends house (up by Lloyd drive ?) Nice to actually find someone on a Land Rover forum who isn't from the SE! Not actually driving the Disco at the mo, having to use my wifes Focus as I'm commuting to Manchester every day - the diesel was costing a fourtune and 2000 miles/month + 16 yr old Disco = FAIL!
  2. You could also try(at the command prompt): ipconfig /flushdns Just in case your computers/router are caching stale DNS records for the affected sites.
  3. BBC: I may not much about Land Rovers, but when it comes to IT I know my stuff! Anglo-Frenchman: Who is your internet service provider ?
  4. I would be up for this. I am based in the Wirral and travel to manchester every weekday for work. Have seen loads of stuff go cheap on ebay when it wasn't economicaly viable to pick it up.
  5. 192.168.1.255 won't be it either. 192.168.1.255 is the broadcast address for the 192.168.1.0 range. To find out your routers IP address, do the following:- Open up a command prompt/dos box (not sure how to do this on Vista - possibly by doing Start->All Programs->run and then typing cmd into the run box) once the command prompt is up, type ipconfig. You will see something like this:- H:\>ipconfig Windows IP Configuration Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.39.9 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.254.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.38.1 The default gateway ( in bold) will be the IP address of your router.
  6. Use Parallels Desktop instead then.
  7. Anybody know of an electronic copy of the discovery workshop manual for pre '95 vehicles ? Or anybody selling a proper one second hand ?
  8. Thanks for all the replies. The Land Rober 2.25 Petrol only produces about 70bhp - how does it even move ! (I assume this is why people are so keen on free wheeling hubs?)
  9. I have been having similar thoughts. Only I was thinking of a smaller motor at the end of each axle, maybe with portal drop boxes to reduce the gearing. That way you would get rid of the power loss in the clutch/gearbox/transfer case/propshafts. You could then replace the engine with a small petrol generator or even keep the the existing engine and just use it to run a massive alternator. I wasn't thinking of it to reduce the the tax - in fact, this would be a good conversion for a tax exempt vehicle.
  10. Thanks for the responses, the article made a good read. Not sure it has all sunk in yet.
  11. Hi, I was wondering if people in the know could educate me on Power/BHP/Torque. Whenever people are talking about engines, phrases like X lb/in at Xk RPM are bandied about and sometimes there is talk of tuning for torque at different RPM's. Whats is the relationship between torque and bhp ? How much of torque/bhp does it take to make 2 tons of land rover move ? How much of this BHP / Torque is 'lost'(?) in the transmission ? Thanks in advance, Phil
  12. You could buy an aircompressor, air impact wrench + set of impact sockets for that (All clarke stuff from micromart). What's the general consensus on the MM Clarke branded stuff - in particular the air tools and compressors ? 1/2" Air impact wrench with impact socket set £46.98inc.VAT (Maximum torque - 230 ft/lb.) Clarke air compressor 5cfm £76.36inc.VAT I'm having the same issue with a J reg disco at the mo - thats why I have been looking at the Clarke air tools. When it can take two hours just to get a couple of bolts off, these things start to sound worthwhile. I after replacing the front springs/shocks/discs, I reckon a decent impact wrench would have saved me about 1 day out of the last tow weekends.
  13. I would pay an extra £1000+ as option for a galvanized chassis - and I'm sure in years to come it would retain extra resale value.
  14. Thanks for all the advice - I will have another crack at this at the weekend and let you know how I get on. I was really worried about damaging the stub axle - despite looking at multiple diagrams, it hadn't quite sunk in that stub axle doesn't actually rotate. I am grinding at the top of the stub axle anyway and the majority of force on the axle will be at the bottom from the wheels pushing back from the road. I think I now understand what it is meant by fully floating half shafts! Thanks again, Phil
  15. I have tried this - I am still worried about damaging the stub axle. Its academic really - if I can't get it off I'll need a new stub axle and if I damage it getting it off I'll need a new stub axle! I might as well just go for it!
  16. I am having no look with the angle grinder - I can't get it at the right angle to create a groove I can exploit with a chisel, without damaging the bearing land or top of the seal land. I think I am just going to get a new stub axle. Does anyone know what the part number is ? Every where that sells them only seem to have them for the '94 onwards - I have a '92. Thanks, Phil
  17. Thanks Paintman, will give the angle grinder ago tomorrow - I've had enough for today!
  18. Hi, One of my front bearings seized up the other day. I have been trying to fit new ones today. After about 2 hours of trying to fit hub assembly on the axle, I have worked out why it won't go on. The inner part of the old inner bearing is stuck on the stub axle:- Can this be removed or does this mean shelling out for a new stub axle ? These are the remains of the bearing Thanks, Phil
  19. Hi, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the part no for the long bolt(including nuts) that attaches the alternator to the engine ? Thanks, Phil
  20. Is it going mad or just not working, or only working when above a certain rev limit ? Mine stopped registering below 2000rpm - it was a precursor to my alternator belt snapping.

    Doh!

Well, I have just stopped for lunch. In the last three hours I have achieved the following:- Removed wheel removed caliper removed half shaft I took me two hours just to remove the caliper - I had to use the bottlle jack to turn the wrench to get them loose! I have given up on the hub nut, hopefully I will have regained enough strength to get it off after lunch.

    Doh!

The shock absorbers have come with there own set of locking nuts - one less thing to worry about!
  23. After reading all these responses I'm kind of glad I haven't got ABS now!

    Doh!

Thanks Doug. I was kind of hoping I could put the old ones on until I have time to get hold of some replacements. Brace yourself for a blizzard of PM's tomorrow. My wife is taking the kids out tomorrow and leaving me to fit:- New front discs and pads New front dampers and springers I also have full set of bushes and I am hoping to at least replace the bushes on the radius arms and panhard arm. My current level of mechanical experience: Changing oil, filter and glow plugs - let see if I am ready for the next level!

    Doh!

Hi, I have ordered new shock absorbers and a bush set for my 200tdi. I didn't realise I would need replacement nuts for the shock absorbers, Panhard rod pivot bolt, radius arm pivot bolts. I see that my local screwfix stock nylock lock nuts - are these suitable ? If so what size do I need ? Thanks, Phil
