  1. Not quite sure what's happened to it. Had it off a few months ago to replace UJ's and it wasn't like that. Just started noticing a metallic clonk. Weird, I'm a real Sunday driver so it's not like it gets real hammering.
  2. Mine definitely has more than that. Probably a good 5-7mm!
  3. Should prop shafts have rotational play? I don't mean the transmission, just the prop shaft specifically between the two parts. Thanks
  4. Still a big budget. You should get a nice tub for that.
  5. I would say for a first series vehicle, 13k is a lot - you might hate it and I very much doubt you will sell it on easily at that price. If you're new to the mark, look for a series 3. 80's models have the best of everything but are not the prettiest. If you're patient, you could find one with a galvanised chassis which will solve a whole load of headaches come MOT time. 2.25 petrols are a good beginners engine - easy to service and pretty basic. The diesels are quite reliable but harder to repair and need more regular complicated servicing and to be fair, return very little more mpg. Later models come with stronger axles, better brakes and slightly improved interiors. Some would say that the gearboxes aren't as strong but they certainly drive better. If you can find one with overdrive, that's also a bonus. Decide what you want it to do. Is it for off roading, is it for tinkering, is it for polishing, is it for carrying things, is it for carrying people? That'll help you narrow down the search.
  6. The pictures are very difficult to see but I am reading on a mobile... It all depends on condition, problems and price! Have you owned one before?
  7. My 1983 county has a hole for one and washer but not currently installed, would like to though.
  8. So, I've been a series owner for over ten years in different forms but now have a hankering to own a RRC. The trouble and strife won't drive the series and we've recently sold her car so I'm thinking it would be a good alternative that she'll at least try. She did used to drive my Volvo 240/940 so big isn't an issue. I'm looking for advice on what to look for in a new purchase, please? I haven't set my sights on a fuel type yet - I don't do massive miles so petrol isn't an issue but equally open to diesel. What are the weak points? Desirable points? Having dealt with rotten series many times, I'm keen to avoid that! Furthermore, if anyone knows of a decent one in Essex, I'm interested before rummaging through eBay and the like. Not after concourse but mechanically sound at least. Thanks in advance!
  9. Excellent - thanks. Haven't checked bearings and that's an easy one so I'll go from there...
  10. Yes I suppose you're right. It'd just be nice to solve it but not if it means loads of exploring when realistically, it runs well...
  11. Yes its only on the uptake. I had suspected clutch plate but I questioned it as it didn't do it in front wheel drive only. The previous owner replaced the clutch so it is s possibility. I've had it 5 years now so I probably should have done something about it... Oops.
  12. Sounds serious... It doesn't always do it. Sometimes it's fine and to be fair, never severe jumping just a bit of a judder. A friend said it could be engine/gearbox mounts - is that plausible?
  13. Back brakes done too - free as a bird. Have no idea about flanges...
  14. No not in 4WD and handbrake is good. It's always done it I was just explaining the recent work that rules out some possible causes.
  15. I get a bit of judder coming through the transmission usually when moving off or reversing. I know this can be characteristic of all sorts of things. Some may know from another recent post that I have just refurbed the handbrake, prop with UJ's and rear diff so should be working well. During this process, I noticed that when the rear prop was off, I moved it using just the front wheel drive and it didn't judder at all but when reassembled with new parts, continued to do as before. Does that help to minimise the possible number of causes?
  16. Success on the MOT! The eezibleed worked really well, quite amazed. I did it once, then took for a spin with a variety of braking styles, bleed it again and all seems good. I may do it again soon but certainly good pressure and loads easier than the traditional method.
  17. No, it's a completely different brown and more to the point, the doors are knackered...
  18. So. My 1983 county is a sort of chocolate brown as many of you will recall for this model. However, at some point, the doors have been resprayed or replaced and are now more like poo brown. I have put this in the wanted section but, does anyone know where I might get some period replacements? I don't really want to respray as I quite like it's rugged patina...
  19. Well, popped the shoes back on just now. I think I have given myself a hernia but there you go. Brake bleadage tomorrow! MOT Friday so could be cutting it fine if I can't get pressure...
  20. Oh, I bought one of those in preparation. A Gunson one do hopefully decent!
  21. Nah, that's how they are. They do tend to close which is pretty annoying. Without looking, I seem to think the joints are riveted too so not easy to tighten. If you can squeeze some PTFE tape in, that might help... Or thick grease used subtly?...
  22. Replaced a cylinder as it was leaking... Failed it's MOT on a fog light bulb (yes, that's right - I was so angry that they didn't just do it!! And, I didn't have a spare handy). But, had some advisories so thought I would "quickly" do these before retest for a clean sheet. Wow, one thing lead to another and have replaced a large part of the transmission. In the meantime, leaky wheel cylinder. A month later, I just want it back on the road!!!
  23. Sounds like I'm going to have finger ache and head ache with these...
