  1. This is some of an essay I wrote on Diesel Fuel Injection Systems a couple of years ago. I don't however no what type a Defender has? On a Bosch VE type pump, a manual cold start device advances the injection timing at idle and during low-speed running. A lever turns a cam that pushes the hydraulic piston to the left, advancing injection timing about five degrees. This injection advance provides more time for the fuel to burn, which improves performance and prevents smoking during cold starts and warm-up. However, above 2200 RPM the piston operates normally and does not contact the cam. There are different types of automatic CSDs (cold start devices) available for the VE injection pump. One popular type is the vacuum-operated CSD that uses a vacuum pump, water thermo valve, and a dual-stage diaphragm located on the injection pump. The thermo valve, applies vacuum to the diaphragm, depending on coolant temperature. Another CSD, called the KSB, advances injection timing by controlling supply-pump pressure. A KSB control valve mounted on the side of the pump overrides the pressure regulator, increasing supply-pump pressure and advancing injection timing. For example, if the temperature is below the set value of the temperature switch, the switch closes and the KSB solenoid switches on. This increases pump pressure. Above a preset value, the temperature switch opens, the KSB solenoid opens, and the pressure regulator now controls supply-pump pressure.
  2. I would recommend the Sealey 24v 1/2" impact wrench. Use it at work daily and its pretty powerful.
  3. I use Ankor Wax at work. It says on the tin its for 4x4s, commercial vehichles, agricultural equipment etc. When dry its opaque in colour (has a slight browny, yellow tint i guess when its dry). Says it can be washed off by pressure washer or parafin wash etc. I have it on my rear crossmember and hasnt rusted yet, and waxoyl on my chassis. I cant see why it wouldn't be suitable to use as its made for that purpose.
  4. Im after a roof rack to hold my spare tyre and some tracmats. Its for a 90. I want something 'cheap' no more that £200 and would like a rear ladder too. I have seen the roof racks from Craddocks for £170ish, and First Four do 3 roof bars for £170ish too. Any experiance with these? Cheers.
  5. That picture is absolutely spot on! I would of swapped, however I have already cut them down im afraid ready for my next outing! Cheers for the pic though. Well I brought them when I first got my first Defender. I thought at the time they would be better (because they were bigger), only after I got them I realised this was not the case! I fitted them anyway but after a far bit of off roading I you can see they have contacted the axle a far bit (although they cause no problems), I now just want to trim them down to the standard size.
  6. I fitted new polyurethane bump stops a while back (the orange deflex extended ones). However I do not have a lift kit nor huge tyres and want to cut them down to the proper size which I forgot to measure before binning the remaining old ones I removed!! I think there 30mm higher than standard? Anyone know? Cheers!
  7. My 6 bolt (gemmer) steering box has started leaking badly from the bottom where the drop arm is attached. I am planning on getting a seal kit from paddocks or famous four which will fix it, which will cost about £20 (genuine kit is £150 + VAT!!!) However is there a way I can test if its the bottom shaft thats worn hence the leak while its still on the vehicle? Would using a bar push the shaft up if is worn? If thats the case I will have to get a recon or new box. Adwest said there 4 bolt box will be a direct replacement (all pipes etc will fit). Is this definately true? Cheers for your help!
  8. Hadn't realiesed there was one! I have now, thanks.
  9. Hi, Just PM'd you, hopefully it has sent? Thanks
  10. Has anyone got any 16" Steel wheels they want to give away/sell cheap to me (in the oxfordshire/northampton area)...? I need some by saturday and im a VERY poor agricultural engineer apprentice! (they can be with or without tyres on. Cheers!!
  11. Bit late now but Knipex (get them through draper) are superb, they do pliers, snips etc all really good german quality.
  12. I have KYB Excel-G shocks which are gas filled. Offer a slighty harsher ride than the standard oilled filled ones but otherwise seem awesome.
  13. Oh I just spent £16 on the threaded block and clips alone!!!
  14. I fitted the new bumper yesterday but what an arse of a job...the bumper bolts were all seized, although removing the old threaded block was dead easy with a screwdriver stuck in to stop it turning. The clips were totally fooked! LR wanted £16 per clip!, and did not even stock them but a local parts supplier sold the clip and block as a set which only cost £16 for two. Getting the blocks into position was my biggest problem as i could not get the bolt thread started. After what felt like an eternity I got one started and then the other side went in nearly straight away!! The HD FirstFour bumper looks spot on thouugh!! Now just need to grind the steering guard so it fits between the 2 recovery points on the bottom of the bumper.
