  1. hi all and a happy new year. well the gearbox on my disco has decided to make lots of noise in 5th. sounds like its trying to rip the shaft out! so i have been looking at ashcroft transmissions for a replacement. i notice they do a same day fitting which will suit me, has anyone used this service with them? due to lack of facilities not able to do it myself unfortunatly. the trouble is luton is about 1.5hr from me in tidworth. does anyone know of a place closer in tidworth/salisbury area as i dont really want to travel too far as i dont want to use 5th. max of 50mph in 4th! if not i will have to ring ashcrofts when they re-open for the new year. so i need a garage in the salisbury/tidworth area to supply and fit an r380 td5 disco gearbox in one day for as cheap as possible. and i would rather have a reconditioned rather than 2nd hand box i cant complain about the car, it has done 126000 miles, i have had it 4 months, with only minor problems until this, oh and it was really cheap with 12 months mot. the minor problems i have sorted are: full service replace exhaust manifold inc gasket and 2 studs new fan belt sorted the leaking sunroofs ace leak pas resivoir cap renewed 2 new tyres and a sticking door catch many thanks in advance jon
  2. just a quick one on spigot bearing removal. the way i have always done it, and seems to be the easiest and nearly always works is to pack grease behind it, find a socket that is a snug fit into the bearing then put a 6" extension on the socket the wrong way round, then a sharp tap with a hammer. hey presto one spigot bearing out. oh and cover with a cloth before you hit it to reduce grease to the face!
  3. hi i had this problem on my disco whilst i was playing around with the nanocom. i think the slabs ecu has been put into transit mode which is what i had done with out realising. when you switch off does it drop right to the bump stops? if so its needs to be taken out of transit mode with either a nanocom or a the garage computer. hope this helps jon
  4. have you checked the hazard switch. try swapping it for a known good one. i think the power for the indicators goes through the switch first and if its goosed neither will work!
  5. just ordered a nanocom from devon 4x4 taking full advantage of the new vat rates! although the wife complained as its close to xmas, but a quick explanation about garage costs for diagnostics soon calmed her down. has anyone had any trouble running it with vista as i have a new laptop which runs it! now just need to convince her that the egr removal is money well spent!
  6. hi m&s just been looking at the IRB jobs, looks very nice but the price is quite high. was probably going to get one off ebay but it will have to wait as i want a nanocom first. well maybe get the disco waxoyled 1st
  7. hey thanks for the advice. i cheated alittle and bought a 2nd hand manifold that was already skimmed. so now need to get my original one skimmed and then sell it, or maybe keep it as a spare. had no dramas with the swap even with 2 flush sheared studs at no 1 cylinder. the list of to-do jobs is mounting: 1) renew injector harness 2) remove egr 3) waxoyl underside 4) sort slipping clutch 5) sort front sunroof leak (did rear with silicon) 6) get it dirty!!!!
  8. My td5 has the exhaust manifold gasket squeal. i have got a new gasket and the wurth nuts/studs as recommended by other forummers. the advice/help i need is it ok just to change these and not get the manifold skimmed or am i just delaying the inevitable. the only down side is i am takink the missus and bambino to cornwall on wednesday so i have only got tomorrow to do the job(weather permitting). Any advice greatly recieved. Thanks jon
  9. just a quick one. just spent best part of 2 hours changing the fan belt on my disco. now realise the viscous fan is a normal thread ie right handed. not like the old 300tdi's which is a left hand thread. maybe i will invest in a workshop manual now just got the rest of the service items to do. should be fun.
  10. cheers for the input guys. will probably wait until i start work on the 25th (have 3 weeks off!!) then i will have access to a good old military workshop with pit/ramp so will do it then. been looking at the POR stuff, anyone used it?
  11. recently purchased a 99 disco td5, with 124000 miles on it! does any one know of a good rust proofing place that can do the chassis in the wiltshire area? i live in tidworth (near salisbury). i want to try to prevent the dreaded rust before it starts. would do it my self but due to the lack of facillities (no garage) and i dont think the neighbours would like me doing it in the car park!! cheers
