  1. Thank you gents, I think I got there in the end, fingers crossed I'm sure all the info is in RAVE and the library above but I'm useless with electrical diagrams Just to close it out - I think the thicker cable goes from battery negative to a bolt on the alternator mounting bracket, thinner cable goes to a lug on the inner wing sort of between the fuse box and brake fluid reservoir Thanks again
  2. Hi All Can anyone tell me where the two earth cables that come from the negative battery terminal connect to? I stripped my engine bay around 3 years ago as part of a full rebuild and have only just started putting things back together (it's been a very busy few years!) I took photos of everything as I stripped it but unfortunately lost these... Any help appreciated, pics below of the cables in question Thanks Peter
  3. Thanks for all the replies. Glad to hear it can be done (actual towing) Thanks also for the info re: legalities etc Cheers Peter
  4. Hi Anyone towed a discovery using an A-frame? I have towed many cars with one but never a vehicle that has an axle and just wanted to know if it was possible. Cant see why it wouldnt work but just thought I would ask. Cheers Peter
  5. The rebuild continues... Chassis and everything that fixes to it is now blasted and painted, thank fook, what a job! Ready to rebuild the front axle with the rebuilt diff, new Ashcroft locker, shafts and CV's that have been in my shed for about 6 months. My thinking - you have done so much, why not go all the way and replace the ball joints on the carriers, Hah! Anyone know how to get these b**tards off without beating the carp out of the carrier? Got one carrier off but abused it so much I couldn't bring myself to do the other side. Also, whats the best way of getting the ball joints out of the axle? Cheers Pete
  6. Hi Can anyone recommend a timing light make? I'm after something decent (good quality) for around £100 Cheers Peter
  7. It's been said on here that the suspension will fit, does that include the springs? I thought these would be slightly different for each model, can anyone confirm Cheers Peter
  8. just read it again and had another good little chuckle to myself £60K spent in title, £50K spent in description?? You could get a LR to drive itself for £60K !!
  9. £60000 spent, where! Am loving his sales technique though... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2000-LAND-ROVER-DEFENDER-90-TD5-BLUE-SWAP-PX-NO-RESERVE-ROOF-TENT-WINCH-OFF-ROAD-/260886078552?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item3cbe05a458
  10. Fook me, I've burnt some money in my time but this is just another level of crazy, and dog ugly too. Probably would of looked OK...ish if it was done properly and with some taste, oh who am I kidding, it looks carp, only monster trucks look good lifted like that Owner - Green laning anyone? Everyone else - Err sorry can't make it, broken diff, cat died, tree fell on the house etc. etc.
  11. Thank you chaps, sounds good so far. What will I need to do to fit a disco auto box into a 90, are there different mounts or is the gearbox different all together? I take it that the springs will fit as well? Ratty - I might consider that, cheers.
  12. Cheers guys. Is it just the rear prop that will need changing, will the front fit ok? What about panhard rods, radius arms and trailing arms? Also the radiator, disco has a new one fitted, hopefully it will go in the 90... Thanks again
  13. Hello So I picked up a 1995 Discovery 3.9 V8 Automatic to drive around while I finish buggering around on my D2. The old cogs in my head started clunking over, as they do, and I now want a 90 (well I've always wanted one) and I'm thinking of building one from scratch on a galvanised chassis etc. etc. and want to use the Disco as a doner vehicle. I know the engine and box will go in ok but I'm not sure about the axles, anyone know if they will fit? Also, is there anything else that will fit, steering, cooling, wiring etc. I will sell the body and chassis as they are in surprisingly good condition, it's a Jap import and was fully waxoyled even in the engine bay, it's a person I'm not that keen on to clean off. Any help much appreciated. Peter
  14. Can anyone recommend a place to have TD5 injectors reconditioned in London or Kent?
  15. Thanks Chaps, is there a visual check I can do or is pressure testing the only way to know for sure if it's cracked. Seems a waste to pay for a pressure test only to buy a new head after...
  16. To be honest, I didn't notice any smoke when it over heated. It was smoking more than usual before it over heated which I'm putting down to the turbo seal at the moment...There was a LOT of oil in my intercooler and inlet manifold, even more than when I still had the EGR fitted. It was doing the usual "cold air blowing" thing from the heater even when temp was set to max, at the time I thought it might have been an electrical problem and drove around (with the heater working when it felt like it) for a couple of months, I was having a few electrical problems due to corrosion caused by road salts so thought this was just another. I know now that this was the 1st indication that there was a problem with the cooling system, hind sight... On visual inspection the head does not seem to be cracked, nor does the gasket look blown, no wet(diesel) patch around any of the injectors either. Do you think this could be water, maybe a crack in one of the galleries in that chamber. I was losing water.
  17. Hi Just took off the head on my TD5 and found an unusual heavy build up of carbon (looks like black lime scale)on the top of No1 piston and around the inlet valve, all other pistons and valves were clean apart from the usual soot build up. Has anyone experienced this before? What is it down to? History - The engine over heated which resulted in me stripping it, no problems before that. Cheers Peter
  18. Thank you, I thought someone was winding me up! What a carp design, what were LR thinking...
  19. Hi Anyone done a like for like engine swap on a D3? Is it as straight forward as removing the bonnet, all the attached wiring, ancillaries etc and hoinking it out with an engine hoist or is there more to it? Cheers Peter
  20. Thanks Les, exactly what I was after
  21. Hi Looks like I'm going to be fitting a new head to my D2. How can I make sure that No:1 cylinder is at TDC? Also, how do I set-up the new head so that No:1 cylinder is at TDC? Any advice much appreciated including anything else I should be looking for or doing. Cheers Peter
  22. Glad you got it sorted. Mine was doing the same thing, only difference it that it was a split hose that caused the problem. Pete
