14Platoon
Thought I'd post a photo of my ex MOD Defender currently taking the head off as it's a bit (a lot) smoky at idle. Changing the injectors stem seals and glow plugs, hopefully that'll sort it. It's fine when normal driving, plumes of grey smoke when sat at idle for a time though.
PaulN
That's really nice! - Something about a Military one! Welcome by the way and I expect some experts will be along shortly. btw - Can I have yer doors and windows!!
14Platoon
Ive had a few jobs completed since my short ownership. Power steering fitted (as optional in some MOD defenders), footwells re plated rather than the crude military plates. Got to sort out the smokey idle and then fit a new power steering pump. 14Platoon
Heads off......no valve stem seals present! Very stiff valve and one valve with a big pit which is nearly a hole.
western
that hole is standard finish, https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/etc-5739-valve-inlet-c2x20634521 & https://www.turnerengineering.co.uk/err-1230-valve-exhaust-c2x20634979 see page 91 2.5 n/a cylinder head parts, items 16 & 17 valve stem seals they are ERR1510 http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/84677/1076/valve_stem_oil_seal_inlet_2_25_2_5 & ETC4751 http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php/85632/0/valve_stem_oil_seal_exhaust_2_25_2_5_diesel_ listed, http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/parts_books/110/2_engine_25P_25D_25TD_p17-167.pdf just replaced all the valves in my 200tdi, they all have that hole,
14Platoon
Now I'm confused? How come one of my valves had that hole then? Was it just a different replacement that someone used? Also are he inlet and exhaust valve stems seals different? They look the same. Thanks
14Platoon
Thanks Western......just reorganised the valve stem seals, wouldn't have realised there was a difference otherwise!
western
might be a spare valve that the base workshops had in stock, or the others are full of carbon deposit from the combustion process.

14Platoon
So as well as no valve stem seals present whatsoever, I've realised a bolt is missing from the rocker arm set up........I haven't got one but don't really want to put it back missing one as it was. western
rocker cover fixings fit in 2 or 3 of the rocket shaft posts

western
have a look at the rocker shaft page in the relevant engine section, IIRC the rocker cover has 3 studs in the top of cylinder head/rocker shaft as well as the 2 bolts

Still looks to be one bolt missing.

This would still leave one bolt missing. I have put the bolt heads onto the bolts for illustration purposes. You can see the bolt hole that will be left redundant at the rear of the photo. To clarify the 4th bridge from the front (2nd from rear) is missing a bolt
western
if there is no remains of a bolt in that hole, [could of sheared off & no-one has bothered to replace it] just get a new bolt & fit, provided the threads in the head are intact. Yeah I'm guessing they forgot it (or didn't bother) as well as the valve stem seals.
14Platoon
So I completed a recon of the head and parts, no plumes of smoke. At idle for over an hour, if I blast the throttle I get a bit of smoke (grey) but not wispy or plume. Is this normal? I have a video but can't seem to upload it? western
I'm not overly familiar with the 2.5 n/a diesel, but a bit of smoke when revved from idle shouldn't be to much to worry about, see how it goes once it's all back together & in normal driving use. Just passed MOT with no advisories, flew through the emissions test.
