roamingyak
Hi all, Any ideas about vehicle category codes (M1, N1 etc) as I've been given a M1G vehicle category for a 1991 Hardtop (exMOD, used to have inwards facing seats in the back I think) when having a N1 would be highly beneficial. Can Hardtops ever be given a N1 code given they are classified as commercial vehicles in the UK I think? (my V5 says private Light Goods Vehicle)?http://www.dft.gov.uk/vca/vehicletype/definition-of-vehicle-categories.asp
miketomcat
M1 is car (probably multi purpose vehicle) N1 is commercial. N1 means you can only do 60mph on a motorway and I think 50 on a roads. It also means being clobbered on the congestion charge in London and soon other city's. Why do you think N1 is beneficial as I put a lot of effort in to getting my ibex registered as a car (M1) because I could see no benefit going for N1 (which is an easier IVA). qwakers
n1 is 70 on m/way 60 on dual carriageway and 50 on single carriageway
miketomcat
I stand corrected but you see my point. I recall a lot of vans being done for speeding recently. Mike
Dave W
N1 is cheaper tax, speed limits are the same as M1 is you fall into one of the special categories such as dual purpose (4x4 for example) or motor caravan, otherwise some limits are lower, as above. My camper van is N1 and I pay the lower commercial rate of tax (£220 ish per year from memory) whereas my Range Rover of the same year is M1 and costs £550 per year for similar CO levels. roamingyak
Importing into another country, or trying to: Hardtop as N1 tax = €4,400 Hardtop as M1 tax = €15,300 I was assigned a M1 but Land Rover don't hold this information so challenging where in the process I was assigned it. And yearly tax is half price as well.
miketomcat
UK road tax is only different N1 versus M1 post 2002. However a hardtop should be N1 road tax only station wagon is M1 road tax. So on this basis your truck should be N1 anyway but quite how you challenge it I don't know. Mike
