Turbocharger
Which alternator do I have, before I order new innards? Is it even a standard LR unit? I remember machining chunks out of an alternator once, but that may have been for my NAD.
FridgeFreezer
Looks physically very close to the stock 65A jobby on my RR. What innards do you need - the reg packs can be bought separately, and brushes often stick and can be encouraged back out with some jiggling & WD40. Andy
looks like the stock Lucas 65A one that used to be on my Disco too
GBMUD
Yep, change the thing on the left in the bottom pic. Three screws, one spade terminal and Bobs your uncle. Be careful not to exert force when fitting the new one or you will break the brushes off. Chris
Turbocharger
Excellent, new regulator on order from SimonB. Can I fit it with the alternator still in place?
GBMUD
I can on my 200Tdi. Looking at the picture, it looks possible - you may have smaller hands than me. Chris
Andy
should be able too, my mate used to have to do his regulary when the brushes stuck. whenever his brushes stuck his voltmeter dropped but the charge light never came on, which is why he'd fitted the voltmeter. from memory the three retaining bolts are 5.5mm heads. FridgeFreezer
You will probably find, if the brushes have stuck, that you can "fix" it with WD40 + fiddling, the brushes spring back out after you dissolve the mud that clogs them up. Dad's alt has been "fixed" about 3 times this way
GBMUD
When the brushes stick you get (a predictable) 0V. I always unstick mine by removing the brush pack and bathing the brushes in water and then excercising them in and out to clear the mud while flushing them in the water. I get precisely the same symptoms as described by Andy - only the volt meter gives it away. John's problem is with the internals of the regulator. Turbocharger
0V? I'm getting 16V, so I suspect the 'regulating' bit rather than the brush bit...
