nickm
200tdi disco any ideas what would produce loads and loads of white smoke guessing its probably the turbo air filter is fine and the breather on top of the head is new oil looks good with no water/white gunk on the filler cap used to start on the button but is now taking a lot longer to fire up
LandyManLuke
When? all the time? on starting? white smoke is probably steam. unburt, badly/partially atomised fuel shows as grey smoke, as apposed to excess fuel, which is black smoke. Tonk
white smoke is normally head gasket

alfredenewman
if you have just chaged belts iwill bet you a bacn roll and tea [collected next meet ] that the pump timing is retarded are we on
reads90
As tonk says head gasket (remeber when mine went Tonk ) If you tdi has done anywhere near 100,000 - 110,000 miles then tend to go at that anyway But on a diesel white smoke means water . and the longer time to start also points to head gasket as the compression in the engine is not as good as it should be ,
nickm
wouldnt it use water and get hot if the head gasket has gone will strip it at the weekend and take a look can also make sure it's timed correctly at the same time knew i should of washed the engine b4 putting it in the worshop
LandyManLuke
But on a diesel white smoke means water . Or incorrectly burnt fuel and the longer time to start also points to head gasket as the compression in the engine is not as good as it should be , or incorrect timing. This all depends on whether the 'white' smoke is steam or diesel - it could be either. I wouldn't suspect the turbo at all, not a bit. If it's producing "loads and loads" of steam, It'd be using water. What does it smell like?
nickm
What does it smell like? guessing it smells of fuel diesel cooking oil redex does sting the eyes a bit
Tonk
As tonk says head gasket (remeber when mine went Tonk ) A34 i believe, on the way to a comp, they always break down at the most convenient times
lrfarmer
If its not using water, i would say the timing in 1/2 -1 tooth out in the pump easy fix, but a pain if you just put the new one on.
Guest WALFY
What does it smell like?guessing it smells of fuel diesel cooking oil redex does sting the eyes a bit I'm using BioDiesel in mine at the moment. When it's cold it smokes abit on start up and then when you rev it. After a couple of minutes it stops. So in my case it's unburnt fuel and not water. People always assume the worst. Check the timing as a starting point and then progress from there.
TheRecklessEngineer
diesel cooking oil redex May be your problem. Veggy in high enough concentration will not atomise correctly in a cold engine = white smoke. Will also occur on a hot engine if your timing is retarded or the injectors are worn. If so, then watch out....unburnt veggy=piston ring coking & sump oil polymersiation. That said, LR TDi's seem to be a bit more robust that some DI engines, possibly because of the swirl chamber set into the top of the piston containing the charge...maybe...
