Scotian
Somone like Les or Western will jump in here and explain in detail but basicly the 300tdi is a little more refined than the 200. The later 300s have a basic ECU and all the 300s have modern pullies (not V belts) They are about the same power as the 200, a tiny bit quieter (apparently), the air filter is in a different place (on the right of the vehicle on the 300) and the oil dip stick is in a different place (Front centre on 300 instead of right side of the engine as you look at it on the 200)

However, they all say that the 200tdi is the stronger engine
Scotian
Just remembered. The 200TDI from the Defender is a few BHP less than the 300 and the turbo is in a different place and a few other things are different . But I dont think the Disco 200tdi has those differences. western
actually 208 improvements/differences between the 200TDi & the later 300Tdi. defender 200tdi has the high mounted turbo similar to the older TD engine, this was done to give the engine a longer less stressed life for working vehicle, the Discovery version has the lower monuted turbo & slifgthly more BHP/Torque to suit it better for Disco/RR applications as private vehicle, in '94 Defender got the 300TDi/rear disc brakes with the same bhp/torque as the same engines in Disco/RR. various details on/around the engine were changed & EGR/EDC appears on certain vehicles, 200Tdi is EGR/EDC free
Guest diesel_jim
200's and 300's (and 2.5 TD's and NA'ds) all share the same main bearing shells, and more or less same crank, so i dont think either is any stronger than the others. some of the very late 200's also had a serpentine belt like the 300's do. Phil Hancock
Make that late NAD, early are the same shells as the 5brg 2.25. No serpentine belt on 200 shown in either disco or defender parts books.
JimAttrill
300tdi has a redesigned front end of the engine including a much better oil pump arrangement. As above, the 300tdi has a serpentine belt, much less fiddly front end altogether. Some 200Tdi parts are hard to get now, including cylinder heads which are made of unobtainium. Luckily the 300Tdi one fits.
Scotian
Anyone want a good 200TDI cylinder head? I've got a spare 200tdi sat doing nothing with a bust piston ring and scored cylinder... everything else is perfect and its the fastest engine I had.
