Newbie help (again !) a few little questions

Hi Folks,

Just awaiting my V plate 5door 1.8 (yes it has had the new head gasket, timing belt, water pump, full exhaust inc CAT).

Just a couple of questions....

Should I be able to fold the door mirrors flat'ish or do they just stick out all the time. One has had a bad knock and will require replacing (reflected in price paid), if the originals are fixed, are there any different ones available that fold flat (live on a narrow street, even lost a mirror on my previous 90 (3.5 V8... Ahh ! ))

Is the radio in the Freelander standard ISO fitting, just a tape jobby at mo' , will need my CD/MP3 ...

What should I expect MPG wise from the 1.8, I know its pullling around a big body with the 5 door. It's not going to get thrashed, I use my Berlingo HDi for that

Right that will do for now, just got to wait until Thursday to pick it up.

Will then post as thing fall off or break !!!!

Phil..

Hi Phil,

have to be honest dont know the answer to two of your questions, but can tell you the mpg you are likely to get is around 28mpg around town, and up to late 30s on a run. dependant on how heavy footed you are. You are probably aware by the wording of your post that the petrol model takes a lot of criticism. I To run a 1.8 petrol on a W plate, and similarly to yourself had the HG done and belt. and have covered 16000 miles without a problem since then, and as ive said in previous posts they aint been easy miles, as i Tow a horse box regularly.

Hope this helps Wayne

Phil..

At that age the mirros didn't fold, but the later folding mirrors can be fitted with a small mod.

Yes, standard ISO fitting.

Can't answer, as I had a diesel.

Now join the Freelander club and get out and get it MUDDY!!

That sort of MPG will do for me, it is sort of a 2nd vehicle as I run around in a 2.0L HDi Ciroen Berlingo van most of the time (yes White !) but it is sign written and it is a bit of a pain when you want to go somewhere "Posh"..

Llanigraham:

Cheers for info regards mirrors.. I will have to see if they look the same as even just changing the Off Side would be a help as long as it still matched the N/S.. It's always parked facing the right way on the street !!

OK on radio fitting, that should help make life easier. Also just dropped a PARROT hands free for the phone in the Van and fancy fitting similar in the Freelander, they require ISO wiring connectors to work through the stereo speakers etc. Not big deal if I have to rewire something but better if not.

I don't think this will be getting too muddy, only on a lake side with the windsurf kit or Kayaks.. Been there with the 90, V8 brute force and good tyres. Never ever needed a tow all the time I had it.. GREAT FUN

Just need to sort out some roof rails, it's got everything I needed spec wise but them...

Cheers

Phil

I dropped a email to Simonites (not sure if that is how you spell it) about some roof rails on their web site.

I had phoned the local official landrover dealer and got a price of around £140 fot the complete rail kit but sims do a full length rail for around £225, sounds like you have to order for them to get the stuff in, would like to see what they are like first ideally as it is a large price difference if they don't quite do what I want. I may speak to them on the phone to get a bit more info.

I carry Kayaks and Windsurf kit and prefer as much space between the roof bars as poss as alot of wind can get under the windsurf board on a roof rack.

Will drop a note on here if I go for the full length version.

Llanigraham:

Thanks for that info re the mirrors. I will have to look into that as I could always sell the old ones on fleabay for spares, no doubt a few folks would have use for them.

Much appreciated for info so far, should get the vehicle tomorrow, just restarting my AA membership ;) , hope I don't need it yet.

Cheers to both for info, no doubt more questions later once I get to know the machine better...

Hi JCB,

I've been watching fleabay.....

Can't believe the crazy prices people pay for 2nd hand kit... MORE than for a new complete package from a dealer.. Mind you, it has worked in my favour in the past when selling on there

Cheers for reply

Just abit of extra info:

Looks like the Full length Roof rails for the 5 door are no longer made, phoned Sim's today :(

Fitted new JVC CD/MP3/USB (memory stick etc) player on Sunday, just dropped straight in (As suggested it would by various folks on here - Thanks) Less than 10 min to to do the swap and load the radio memories. Anyone doing the swap, don't forget you will no doubt need the antenna adapter to go in the radio so the standard L/R antenna will fit.

Right just need the new O/side folding mirror and Standard length roof rails...

Done around 250 miles and appears to be doing just over 30MPG, not bad, possibly get better as I get used to driving a petrol again, first one in 10 years since my V8 90.... That did 18 mpg on a good run but the sound through a stainless exhaust system was EXCELLENT.

Cheers

Phil

Sorry to hijack...

I'm about to purchase a Freelander - a 2005 5-door - and was wondering if there was anything in particular I need to look at on the forecourt?

It seems to have folding mirrors and lots of other toys that I've never had on a car before.... I'm looking forward to it :)

Hi

Is it from a main dealer? If so the warranty will probably cover most stuff that will go wrong, I have found the two local main dealers to me have been excellent with the odd problems I've had (new fuel pump & air flow meter). The only thing I would say is try not to pay too much in the first place because some of the prices seem to be a bit ambitious... Otherwise check for all the usual stuff and go through the service history, there's lots for sale at the moment and plenty of choice.

I'm not an expert but having done the same thing in January this year (bought 2005 5dr Td4) maybe this will be helpful?

If you have a read through the rest of the Freelander section the question has been asked and answered before more than once.

Hi Phil

Yes, it is a simple job to swap the mirrors over to the later (2001MY onwards) mirrors.

You can pick up new mirrors (heated and electric adjusting but not "powerfold") from eBay or internet supplier for £60-£75.

Fitting is a single cup of tea job:

- Kettle on

- Gently prise the little triangular plastic trim from interior

- Disconnect wires

- Remove mirror (bolt and screw IIRC)

- Make tea

- Offer up new mirror and you will find that one of the holes in the door is too small

- Drill out this hole but only through the outer skin (to 12mm IIRC)

- Paint the bare metal

- Drink tea

- "Fitting is reverse of removal" as the they say in the Haines manual

- Test that adjustment and heating element work when ignition is in position II/engine running.

If I can do it, anyone can. I've got pics somewhere if you would like them, but it is shown quite well in the Haines manual.

The only thing I found tricky was that I didn't have the right size drill bit to hand.

Cheers

Cheers for the info, looks like I should be Ok on that. I've done a test run with the internal triangular trim piece, Removal tool at top not bottom, found that out the hard way but luckly did no damage to the panel..

It looks like the door panel needs to come off, at least the top needs releasing to allow acess to a connector as I didn't see one when I removed to small trim panel so I guess it's behind the door trim (unless you know different of course !! ).

I'm Ok with regard the drill bits etc, worse case I have a reamer or a titanium cone cutter (maybe the cone cutter will be a bit OTT as it is good for 1/4" plate !)

Thanks again

Phil

Hi Blippie,

Job Done, couldn't see the connector on first "quick inspection".. Took about 10 mins to do, not overly happy about how the front of the housing seats to the door with the MEGA gasket. If it whistles when traveling I may have to mod the gasket slightly but apart from that all is fine. New roof bars fitted at same time (10 mins)...

If only everything was as easy..
