draper40
Hey, I think that my outriggers/dumb irons need replacing. Here are some photos of the parts I mean: If am correct what should I purchase and where from? Pete
Les Henson
Make your own with 3mm plate - using the old ones as a template. Les.
draper40
Not sure it is really worth it especially as i can't weld for the sake of however much they may cost- have got someone lined up to weld replacements on. Pete
pat_pending
Paddocks do dumb irons, fairly thick metal, but they don't really go back far enough. Good basis to start though as all the hard works been done, just needs extending back with some flat plate. Think they're about £35.
Les Henson
Buy a front crossmember - you get both dumb irons and the crossmember. The area to rear of the front crossmember rarely rusts due to the amount of oil that's been leaking onto it over the years. Les.
draper40
The front cross member was replaced about a year ago- but would it still be a better idea? Pete
Les Henson
If you need to repair behind the dumb irons, then I assume the chassis rails are corroded. If you bought seperate dumb irons - you would be welding to something that's already beed welded on that also needs patching to repair it. Too much welding in one place I would have thought. Les. draper40
Do i need to repair behind the dumb irons? I posted as i was not sure what needs replacing and what doesn't according to the photos. Pete
pat_pending
You wont really know just how far back you need to go until Mr grinder has paid a visit. What appears to be good metal now, may only half its original thickness, you have to go back to the good stuff. I would possibly do as Les said and go for a whole x/member and irons, though i don't know who does them. Then have a sheet of 3mm steel handy. Hybrid_From_Hell
The repair panels are often absolute sh*te. The money you will spend and then the time F about getting them to fit anywhere near close IMHO means you could as Les has said cut out the rot and replace by welding in (or getting someone who can properly) sections, far better job in the end Nige
