Transmission noise

Recommended Posts

 Hi, i am looking for some advice on a noisy transmission on a 95/96 defender 110 csw, There is a loud whine in all the gears when driving which goes when the clutch is depressed,is this gearbox or the transfer box

The vehicle has been off the road for a couple of years & was ok when it was last used ( ie no transmission noise ) & the oil levels are both correct, The fact that it is noisy in all gears suggests to me that it is the transfer box not the gearbox.

Any advice / suggestions from anyone,

Cheers, Mark :)

Hi, i've tried the transfer box in high & low ratio's, the noise is still the same  Gearbox & t/fer box in neutral coasting, no noise

just looking for idea's as it seems like a lot of work to change the T/box only to find out it is the gearbox !!

cheers, Mark

First thing, have you checked the oil levels?

Next, if the oil levels are ok, try to locate the source of the noise. Is it present only under load - acceleration and/or engine braking - or under all conditions. If only under load then listening for problems becomes a bit more difficult.

Transfer box in neutral leaves the main gearbox and the input end of the transfer box connected to the engine. Is the noise still present in every gear or slightly less in one (4th?) when the engine is driving the geartrain?

Check also with the main box in neutral and the vehicle coasting, is the noise present in high or low ratio?

Noise in the first check puts the problem in the main box or input end of the transfer box. Noise in the second isolates it to the mainshaft or input end of the transfer box. No noise in the second suggests layshaft or input shaft bearings. A reduction in the noise when in 4th would point to layshaft bearings. Your test with both boxes in neutral suggests the output shaft bearings and centre diff are ok.
