wozza35
Can anyone give me any ideas what is the most likely cause of oil pressure light being on? i have checked the switch (ok) but when i took the top oil feed pipe off the turbo and run the engine for as long as i dared no oil was coming out so does this mean the pump has gone or could it be worse please tell me something good warren

western
check & top up oil to correct level, if that doesn't cure it, check the oil pump drive shaft is intact or even it's actually in the engine.
wozza35
Well just managed to be towed up to the barn i use and get the sump off and it turns out the oil pump has broken just below where it is bolted in I can only assume this has happened because the engine i bought was from a defender that was hit by a lorry so hard it snapped the transfer box off the back of the gearbox but the only visible damage to the engine was a badly dented sump .So i think it must have been broken then but only just decided to give up the ghost But i suppose it could of been worse, just have to work out how to get the rest of the pump out now cheers warren
western
not good news, but at least you know what the fault is, a new pump & driveshaft should fix it.
therealboss
The bolt came out of my oil pump drive, like you I stopped it as soon as I seen the oil light come on. Might be worth checking the shells, I had to replace them all but the crank was fine.
