Mean Green
I have been suffering bad vibrations from my 90 at about 50-60mph, they were not coming through tthe steering wheel. So after a post on here, I decided that it was coming from the front prop. I finally got round to pulling off the prop and taking it for a spin tonight. Early indications suggest that the vibrations have gone. So .. do i replace the propshaft or get it re balanced? I have had a look and both UJ's look fine - there is no play in either. What sort of money is likely to be in a prop rebalance?
western
on the main tube, is there any balance weights -- small rectangular steel plates about 1inch square, see if any have fallen off, normally spot welded in each corner, so should be fairly easy to tell if any are missing. no idea about costs in your area for prop balancing, have a look in the phone book under prop shafts or similar
Les Henson
Removing the prop doesn't mean that the prop is the problem - it has merely identified the location of the problem to the prop, front axle, or transfer case. You are just removing or changing the loading on these components. Les.

Les Henson
By a process of elimination. Wheel bearings, swivel pin bearings, CV joints, play in the diff/transfer box flange, radius arm bushes (either end), shock absorber bushes, panhard rod bushes, collapsed springs, etc. Les. Les, I know the suspension component are all in good order. But what about Diff/transfer flanges.. I have not yet looked but I do not know what I am looking for / how to check them. can you advise? western
grab each flange & see if you can move it up/down & side to side, there should be hardly any movement.
white90
Spent to long sorting this replaced diff bushes ujs transfer box wheels balanced props then fitted a Double carden prop problem solved if you have lifted the suspension or fitted castor correction arms save yourself the hassle and fit a DC prop problem will go away PS the Transfer box flange should and will have 4-5mm movement this is perfectly fine as it has a roller not a taper bearing http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=
Mean Green
Thanks for all the input. Got word today from my local driveshaft specialist that the prop is done. There was play on the slider lining (I think thats what he called it) and that would be causing the vibration. So got a new one ordered. Fingers crossed that it solves the problem. Tony - I run standard suspension and it is all fairly new and red polybushes all round - thats why I was fairly certain it was not suspension related. white90
I hope so as it is a pain to locate/fix vibration issues
