indoken
hi Anyone know the easiest way to test a thermostat as my engine stays cold all the time I think my thermostat may be stuck open. Many thanks
Les Henson
Take the stat out - you'll see if it's stuck open quite easily. There's a possibility that it's opening too soon as well, which is not so easy to detect. A new stat is very cheap and it might be worth just replacing it for the peace of mind. Les. JimAttrill
Put it in water and bring it to the boil. A 300Tdi thermostat should open at 88°C. They normally fail closed which is worse than failing open.
DrRob
If the needle on the temp guage is not moving at all then suspect the temp sender perhaps??? If it does move but stays on the cold "side" then suspect thermostat. Rob
BogMonster
I have never had much success with trying to boil thermostats and for the cost of a new one (genuine part is about a fiver, don't bother with anything else) by the time you drain the coolant and take it off you might as well just replace it anyway.
