21j
Hi, I am putting a 90 turbo head on my 21J NA diesel engine. I have some work to do on the standard 4 speed gearbox. The gearbox is fitted with a fairy overdrive. My question is, do I 1. Fit Disco diffs 2. Fit Disco diffs and high Ratio transfer box from Ashcrofts 3. Fit Disco Diffs and retain overdrive I would like the gearing to be like a 90. Wheel fitted are 235 85's Thanks
rusty_wingnut
really not smart bolting the turbo'd head onto that block......... won't matter what ratios you've got you won't be going anywhere fast

It came from a 110 that was flying along
Gremlin
Melted and broken pistons will be the result. Gearing, do not change the diffs you are aiming at too high a ratio even with that engine! Grem
rusty_wingnut
a WELL setup 19j 88 can pull rangie diffs but i wouldn't tow with it. off road it was first ger low for anything major and you can't use any other gear.
yellayomper
Ashcrofts aren't at present able to supply high ratio transfer cases. I've just tried to get one.
Jon White
Stick an lt77 and lt230 in it and be done with it. I find a 200tdi, on a defender LT77 with Disco 1.22:1 transfer box, with 4.75:1 R&P's on 33" tyres to be about right. Jon
Gremlin
I also run a 200tdi, lt77 with a rangie 1.003 transfer box, with 4.7's on 32 tyres and its just right for what i use it for. If i get bigger tyres it will be a bit better......... G

FridgeFreezer
It's doable with an 88", you can lose the massive fan cowling and viscous fan, shift the whole lot forward and gain about a foot.
