leaky axle

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

noticed oil stain on NS rear drum and thought I'd just pop the drive member off and re-seal it. But the leak isn't coming from where the drive member mates with the hub, it's coming from the end of the half shaft - I could see bubbles coming along the splines.

Can anybody tell me if there is an internal gasket that needs replacing? - or what else could cause this. There is a clunk when taking up drive but I'd put this down to A-frame bushes or worn output shaft.

Many thanks,

Dave.

You don't read a lot of the posts on here then do you ??

A ouple of days ago the same question was asked.

I replied GOOD.:P The oil keeps the splines lubricated if no oil the splines dry up thenm fret the shesr off.

A new cap might keep more oiol in. I put EP90 into that cap every service.

that's funny - according to SWMBO I spend far too much time reading posts on here :P

I hadn't realised the plastic cap was meant to seal aswell - I thought it was just a dust cap

It took some getting off and appears to be intact so I'll clean it up and so if it seals OK - is it OK to use RTV instead of the paper gasket on the drive member?

Not for me it isn't. RTV takes too long to clean off.

Do as Ralph says and a smear of grease on each side of the gasket stops it sticking and makes for easy removal.
