3.9efi in 200Tdi, temp sensor = smoke switched live???

Recently wired up the 3.9EFI into the 1993 defender 200Tdi.

We decided to wire up the the temperature guage/sender. We left the original range rover one in and wired it straight into the green and blue wire that goes to the guage.

When switched on the gauge started to move up quickly and then smoke came from engine plug. Turns out that for some reason, the white switched live melted.

Thoughts please?

Was this caused by Range Rover temp sender or what?

Any info/help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

James

Two thoughts

Are you sure you did nothing else at the same time as making this connection? Is very easy to be doing plenty of bits and think that the last one you did is the cause.

The sensor on the RRC goes into an electronic module on the back of the dash. The module then connects to the instrument so there may be a fundamental difference in the way the two cars should be wired.

Yes, I know whats happended.

You have a classic problem associated with Lucas Electrics - did you seal

the end of the harnesses before disassembly, and then more importnatly

unseal the 2 ends once rejoined so to allow the Harness smoke to be able to flow properly ?

If not then theres your problem, the lucas smoke has escaped from your electrics,

this can be reinstalled but is a tricky operation, as once it starts to esacpe it can

continue to do so in the future all over the loom for no apparent reason,

buy the large size, part number on picture

Im pretty sure we didn't do anything else. Everything was running fine until we connected up the temp sender.

Im wondering if the Range rover temp sender was sending a signal too strong for the Land rover and we should maybe swap it for the land rover temp sensor form the 200tdi engine?

Or is it possible that the switched live we are using (which is very thin) maybe gave up the ghost with an extra surge of power?

Starting to think im using the wrong switched live?

melted wires = too higher resistance in the wire, and or too much current flowing through it, get your multimeter out and start looking.

try a thicker wire, and put a fuse in it.

Yep, we found it. Turns out that the Range rover one was sending too much power through so we put the 200tdi sensor in and a fuse and it seems fine. We have also beefed up our ignition live cable to be safe. All works good now touch wood!:D

Hybrid from hell - haha, that looks like useful stuff that, any idea where I can get a jar for my Land rover and mini?;)

Thanks
