Reverse Problem

Recommended Posts

hi all, hope someone could maybe point me in the right direction as i cant find any info on how to solve my problem.

ill start from the beguinning...... ive got a defender 200tdi with an LT77 gearbox. The gear box if from a scrapped 300tdi as original box broke. this box was fitted when i bought the vehical 3 months ago. When i bought the landrover the box had just been fitted 2 nights before as the orignal box broke 2 days after i agreed to by the vehical so the gentelman i got it from was building a new landrover project and fitted the box he was going to use to replace the broken box in mine.

when i bought the landrover it was stiff selection 1st, needed a good push, or it jumped out of gear, and selecting reverse was difficult. it felt as if the mechanisum that stops you selecting revers while moving forward was stuck and not allowing the gear lever to move to the left to select reverse. even stopping pumping the clutch etc didn't solve the problem.

so first of all i thought it might be the cluch, how ever the gentalman i bought the vehical off had fitted and upgraded cluch kit not long since and said it was fine when he checked it when fitting the new box. also stopping the engine and selection rever doesn't help its still wont move to the left.

after researching and talking to the gentalmen i bought the vehical off ive been told you can adjust the selector or that the secector pin for reverse (a pin and spin so i have read) may be stuck, bunged up or broken. Ive also read this is a 10mins job to repaire or can remove totally but makes it funny when selecting 1st as it will just go stright into reverse as there will be nothing to stop it.

in all the posts i have read this in there has been not instructions on how to check or fix this... no other information than its the selector pin.

can anyone help me out with a how to or a pick o show the selector pin or when can i adjust if anything to fix this.

Thank You

could be the reverse light switch is wound in too far, it's has a green & a green/brown trace wire on it, unscrew it & hopefully you will be able to select reverse gear,

to reset the switch, leave it in reverse, turn the ignition on [but don't start the engine] screw the switch in so the reverse light comes on, then screw the switch in another half a turn. then tighten the locknut & check you can deselect & reselect reverse, if all is OK, turn off the ignition, job done.

if you go to this page and download the Defender 90 & 110 Workshop Maunual part 3 it explains how to reassemble the selector. Not that you need to do this, but it explains how to set the bias springs, which might help.

Start on page 15/16 of the pdf

cheers people. just to add my reverse light doesn't work so could be the reverse switch mentioned above.

is that switch accessible through the centre seat/box cover ie near the breathers??

Yes or remove the gearbox tunnel panel.

Reverse gear switch won't affect selecting 1st gear - just reverse.

Les.

the 1st gear problem i think is the same as alot of other people get, where you go into seconded first then into 1st no problem, just the reverse is the problem as the lever wont go left past the 1st-2nd zone

well took the switch out and that didn't solve the problem, whipped the rever plunger out and hay presto rever gear can be selected again.

took the plunger appart as instucted in manual but mine hever had a circlip on the end as the PDF. after rebuilding it i found that it didn't depress once compressed. the ball baring on the spin i is able to push through onto the pluger and into the plunger chanel. i gather the ball is ment to stay inside the ball and spring chanel and just roll over the plunger, not actually push through into the chamber??
