minivin Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 Ah kay, been an interesting day, I have contacted both P A Blanchards and Duxford who list in their spares that they have the spring compression tool, but alas they don't. I have also gone to Land Rover direct through my offical spares dealer and they have not done tools in years and have sub contracted it to SPX. Now unfortunately SPX do not have a cross-reference chart for old vehicles and only "really" specialise in the modern Land Rovers...... So alas, this tool has become an item that no one does/will/want to stock. Does anyone have one of these tools that they would be willing for me to borrow to take dimensions off so that I can produce my own tool? andyb Posted August 4, 2009 Share Posted August 4, 2009 I made my own (years ago) from a piece of ally sheet. The old relay is a good pattern. Just copy the 4 bolt end plate, but make your tool a C shape with only 3 of the bolt holes so that it will move sideways out of the way once the spring is compressed. IIRC you use the offical tool to compress the spring and lock it into place under two bolts. I did similar but used a length of tube in a vice and then put two bolts into place. Then it is pretty much the same as the WSM says. If you want I will try and find my 'special tool' and take a picture to give you a better idea of what I mean. mickeyw Posted August 11, 2009 Share Posted August 11, 2009 I made a tool to do this job some years back. I just took some sizes off the relay. I can't remember if I copied a WSM picture of a pukka tool or just made it up but it did the job. missingsid Posted August 13, 2009 Share Posted August 13, 2009 Here's mine for what it's worth I had a look at my Series 1 LR reprint manual last night. It suggests using a sack to catch the spring as it flies out of the bottom of the inner unit. It then shows refitting using a pin in a hole half way down the unit and screwing the spring in to a compressed state. Looked bloody dangerous to me and it wasn't even a Ha&$es Manual. Marc.
