wandering steering

Recommended Posts

I had wandering syndrome. Especially noticable in strong side winds or passing a lorry (or more likely, him passing me). Got a big lever and gave all the joints a pry without obvious results. Also checked steering joints for play. For no good reason (shouldn't cause wandering) I had a look at tracking. Eeek! About 5mm toe out. Should be = up to 1.5mm.

A (not very) happy afternoon spent beating rod ends into submission, 1/2 an hour setting up tracking. And the wandering's stopped. Can only think it was pulling or putting load on the bushes.

In no particular order to check:

Track rod ends

Drop arm ball joint

Steering damper

Tracking

Rear trailing arm and A frame bushes

Front radius arm bushes

Panhard rod bushes

Swivel preload

steering column UJ's

Steering box adjustment.

Start with the easy to do ones and keep going until the problem goes away.
