zardos Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 My 3.9 V8 has started eating starter motors for breakfast Any ideas why it is doing this to starter motors? It's the second one that has snapped the nose cone off (note this vehicle does get used off road but it looked fine when is was removed a few days before it broke) Quote
GT6Steve Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Do these things ever eat thrust bearings? Could the flywheel be moving enough to contact the starter? Does the ring gear show any damage? Trans is tight to the block right? Quote
sheltie50 Posted October 10, 2009 Posted October 10, 2009 Hi, Mine did just this when the front springs were realy shot and the bump stops missing, the front axle and starter made a lasting imperssion on each other when thay made solid contact! it broke the starter motor clean in two, has the starter been changed as the solinoid was moved from bottom to top of the starter or was that the way it had been assembled, anyone? Might be worth checking things like engine mounts and anything which could lead to axle and engine collision !! complete sob when it happened to me! Quote

This happened just after all the engine mounts had been replaced, the first breakage was before the engine mounts where replaced. Note the bit that has broken off is inside the bell housing so unlikely to be hit by the axle. The solenoid position has always been this way (on the bottom) for this engine. Also there are no gaps between the bell housing and the engine. Quote
zardos Posted October 21, 2009 Author Posted October 21, 2009 Did you find the problem. Not yet, I need to split the gearbox off to retrieve the nose cone as I think it is jamming the clutch. When I do I'll will be able to inspect the problem better. So at the moment its off the road. Quote
sheltie50 Posted October 21, 2009 Posted October 21, 2009 Cant think what it can be if the clutch continued to work Pull the engine it's easier. Would be very interested to know. Good luck. Quote
general-confusion Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 we found the answer there was a tooth missing from the flywheel. Thanks to all for their help Steve (Zardos's brother) Quote
sheltie50 Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 Thats one for the memory banks, no wonder it took a while to find it, thanks for letting us all know. Quote
