An alternative, and one that I (well, RogueVogue) applied to my Tdi pipe, is to fix the ends of the pipe in position on a bench so that they will line up again after - clamps should do this - and then to cut out the box and weld in a straight piece of pipe in it's place. It worked well on my Tdi but I soon got bored with the row it made and bought a new exhaust with the boxes in. :)

No, no other difference. It was kicking about at Paul Wightman's for ages where I failed to put it in the scrap bin - I suspect that it has now been put in the scrap bin howver, and re-cycled as a Chinese Mini-Moto or something.

You don't want to do it - unless you want to sound like you are driving a chavved up mk3 Escort.

I removed mine when I fitted the underdrive this meant no silencers

1 trip to exeter later he next day saw me getting a centre box fitted

the noise drove me mad, far too loud.

I have the oval straight through box to miss the underdrive catalyst removed and your(James) straight through pipe to finish

There certainly is a lot of bulls**t talked about this subject.

some people reckon that the turbo silences the exhauset enough and you don't need silencers... i'd always thought that was pretty unlikely... and i think the claimed performance increases are a bit iffy aswell...

Chris and Tonys experiences prove me right.

I wouldn't do it, as i can do without it sounding like a chaved up nova....

if you like the sound of a screaming diesel, drive through the Dartford tunnel at about 60mph with all your windows open.... ;)

works for me.... B) :)

i agree there are alot of claims to changing the exhaust and performance benefits etc.

in my experience a straight though pipe will only improve performance/mpg if your vehicle is tunned a bit anyway. The std exhuast is more than adaquate at getting rid of the gases, just when an engine is chipped etc you benefit from the free(er) flowing gases/less restrictions with a straight through pipe.

Mine has a gas flowed head - I noticed no difference in performance with the straight through pipe though. I suspect my snorkel may be a little restrictive however so it does not help the power of the engine at higher speeds. The one benefit(?) it did have was to make the engine sound incredibly big and powerful at tickover and, especially at startup. It sounded like a huge turbocharged monster of an engine!
