Oddlimbs
I have a 2002 Defender 90 with air conditioning, but the blower on the cooling pack has ceased to function, though the compressor clutch seems to engage ok. Not sure if its due to a lack of pressure in the system or just an electrical fault! If you have a similar vehicle, please could you confirm whether the compressor needs to be functioning before the blower will work or not? Thanks! Just gone and taken a look, my TD5 A/C is the type that makes your knees cold, on an >MY2003 it has the two switches left temp right fan speed (just incase this is not the same) The clutch does not seem to engage until the blower is switched to 1, so it looks like it is the other way round and the switch control, engage the compressor. Hope this is of some help, Jason.
landy andy.
I agree with above, The blower (internal fan) works on it's own and the compressor cuts in and out as it is required. The compressor will not work if it is low on refridgerent pressure, but the blower/fan will. Start with fuses and electrical, and check you can turn fan by hand. Oddlimbs
Thanks for that chaps, yest it is the type that makes your knees cold! I should have also asked if the blower will work with the ignition on, but without the enginge running - it's a long story, but I cannot currently start the enginge! Yes blower works with ignition on but engine not started.
Oddlimbs
Yes blower works with ignition on but engine not started. Thanks Jason, fairly sure that it's electrical.
Oddlimbs
The compressor will not work if it is low on refridgerent pressure, but the blower/fan will. Andy Andy, do you know that for a fact/from experience?
landy andy.
Was told that by the specialist who re-gased my system. From what I understood it spins the pump pulley, but the relay does not cut in to operate the clutch on the compressor, as the refridgerent also contains the lubrication/oil for the pump. So it is a safety/damage control thing. Hope that helps. Any more questions just ask. I also find that the air con works better for the driver if you redirect the second vent (from the blower/fan side), you can get it to blow towards the drivers face. Oddlimbs
Thanks again for your assistance with this guys, I have now checked out as much as I can without removing the A/C duct unit from under the dash. Seems like it's either the blower motor, relay or associated wiring, both of which are hidden behind the duct assembly, so I will need to get the system emptied next week before I can go any further.
