low mpg

The mpg just dropped all of a sudden? If yes, how much did you get and when (which month).

If not, try to describe your driving conditions: town, highway, towing, hilly/twisty roads, the average speed (distance of the average journey divided by time taken to complete the journey) etc.

Depending on conditions, 20 mpg might be a good value for a Td5 auto.

Are you sure you did the math correctly? Give us an example of how many litres vs how many miles.

Air filter can be a cause of a 1-2 mpg drop but with a 4-5k miles since the last change, unless you drove in very dusty/sandy conditions, I don't think it's the case here.

50 quid of diesel at the January UK average of 114p/litre means 43.86 litres.

140 miles on 43.83 litres means 14.5 mpg - that's low, unless you drove offroad or heavy snow.

Maybe you're loosing fuel - back of the engine from the pressure regulator or top of the fuel tank from a pipe - these are two common places on D2 Td5s.

Or maybe you're doing very short runs (3-5 mile journeys), let it run in the morning until it heats up inside, have and use a fuel heater (webasto).

If you are not getting any leaks and it is engine related then it must be smoking like a good un

to check if it is air filter just take it out and go for a run it should feel a lot more perky if it is just same then it's good

other thing to check are brakes binding or is one of the prop shafts seized

P.S. My Volvo will do nearly 500 miles on £50.

600 in the Skoda (typically) :P

However, 210-ish in the 90  definitely something wrong with the Td5! It's not in low box or got "Bad Boi" monster mud tyres on has it (which could also lower the apparent mileage reading). Roofrack?
