milliejasper1111
I would try a basic service first, air filter, oil, fuel filter, whats the mileage? when was its last service? I tend to do my disco every 6000 miles just to keep it happy, Parts cost next to nothing. Ian

cipx2
The mpg just dropped all of a sudden? If yes, how much did you get and when (which month). If not, try to describe your driving conditions: town, highway, towing, hilly/twisty roads, the average speed (distance of the average journey divided by time taken to complete the journey) etc. Depending on conditions, 20 mpg might be a good value for a Td5 auto. Are you sure you did the math correctly? Give us an example of how many litres vs how many miles. Air filter can be a cause of a 1-2 mpg drop but with a 4-5k miles since the last change, unless you drove in very dusty/sandy conditions, I don't think it's the case here. gunner29
mpg dropped over the past couple of months, normal driving speed is between 30/40mph. couple of mates with similair vehicles getting 25mpg
gunner29
forgot to mention 140 miles on 50 quid
cipx2
50 quid of diesel at the January UK average of 114p/litre means 43.86 litres. 140 miles on 43.83 litres means 14.5 mpg - that's low, unless you drove offroad or heavy snow. Maybe you're loosing fuel - back of the engine from the pressure regulator or top of the fuel tank from a pipe - these are two common places on D2 Td5s. Or maybe you're doing very short runs (3-5 mile journeys), let it run in the morning until it heats up inside, have and use a fuel heater (webasto). gunner29
deffo no leaks been all over the thing today, will check air filter how many pounds do they cost
pinhead
If you are not getting any leaks and it is engine related then it must be smoking like a good un to check if it is air filter just take it out and go for a run it should feel a lot more perky if it is just same then it's good other thing to check are brakes binding or is one of the prop shafts seized
gunner29
how do i check for seized prop-shaft?
pinhead
unfortunatly the only true way to tell is to take it off
gunner29
dont think it brakes or propshaft there isnt any resistance when foot removed from gas pedal, no black smoke either.someone said could be dodgy fuel gauge
TheRecklessEngineer
I suggest a proper MPG test: Fill until the pump clicks, reset trip gauge. Drive 100 miles or so, refil until pump clicks, note how many litres went in, and what the trip meter reads. Then you can work out your MPG to a reasonable level of precision. P.S. My Volvo will do nearly 500 miles on £50.
errol209
P.S. My Volvo will do nearly 500 miles on £50. 600 in the Skoda (typically) However, 210-ish in the 90 definitely something wrong with the Td5! It's not in low box or got "Bad Boi" monster mud tyres on has it (which could also lower the apparent mileage reading). Roofrack?
