Noise from TD5 gearbox

I've only just joined this forum, so go easy on me.

We have owned a Disco 300 tdi for years now & have recently bought a 2000 TD5 GS.

The problem we have is a noise from the TD5's manual gearbox on first start up. It's not a belt squeal as we've checked all those. When I engage either reverse or 1st it's most noticeable. After a couple of miles it goes away.(It reminds me of a noise that the clutch release bearing made on a MK2 Escort I had years ago.) Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Gearbox or flywheel?

Thanks for reading & I hope someone can help. :)

It sounds like the very common problem of your first motion shaft from the gearbox that goes through your clutch and into the spigot bearing in the flywheel....these get dry and squeal more so when cold or your foot is on the clutch.

Sounds exactly like the noise mine has made for the last few years. It hasn't got any better or worse. It was still there even after I had the clutch and flywheel changed by LR themselves...

When I asked the dealer about it (at the time of the clutch/flywheel change) they said that it's fairly common. They didn't report any problems with the first motion shaft, or the old release bearing...

Just keep an ear on it and see if it gets any worse. Mine was worse during the couple of really cold snaps we had and has now gone back to doing it for the first few minutes, then it disappears completely.

  • 1 month later...

Hi,

I have a very similar problem and has gradually got worse over the last 6 months since owning the car. I'm taking no chances and renewing clutch assembly, spigot bearing and probably the 1st motion shaft bearing and seal.

Can anybody recommend a clutch manufacturer or ones to avoid?

Cheers

I've been having the same noises from my TD5 too. I'm not taking any chances and renewing the spigot bearing, clutch assembly and the gearbox 1st motion shaft bearing and seal.

Can anyone recommend a manufacturer or ones to avoid for the clutch?

Cheers
