Mean Green
Vehicle - 200tdi Defender Symptons - End of exhaust is wet with what seems to be oil. Some smoke on start but big clouds of smoke after slow driving or if engine have been idling for any length of time. Am I right to think this is turbo seals leaking into the manifold? Does this mean a replacement turbo or can it be reconditioned? (How much is this likely to cost?) What else could be causing these symptons? FridgeFreezer
White smoke, black smoke, blue smoke? Is it actually oil on the exhaust or just the entirely normal condensation+soot combination you always get?
Mean Green
I can't be 100% sure that it is oil, but it is never dry and seems to be more of an oily sludge rather than sooty water. The smoke is more blue than black.

Mean Green
So am I right to think that it will be the turbo then?
Aragorn
you probably cant be sure, but if you remove the turbo and inspect the turbine housing you might be able to tell where the oil is coming from. If the turbine inlet is oily (the bit that bolts to the exhaust manifold), then its got to be coming from the engine, and if the inlet is dry and the outlet is oily then its coming from the turbo seals.
