western
Discovery sender isn't a good match for the existing gauge, either use the original engines sender or the Defender unit PRC8593, do a search too as this comes up a lot.

Tom I have also done this conversion. I fitted the TD sender to it. When well warmed up, the gauge is near the top of the white segment, worrying at first, but shows no sign of being overhot, just as you say. Perhaps the more central mounting point on the TD engine gives a more "average" block temp. whereas mounted near the thermostat housing is the hottest part thus a high reading? Perhaps the way to go is as Western suggests - 200tdi Defender sender. I think I will try that myself!
fender1234
this is what i used http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/Store/Performance/Gauges_&_Dial_Kits/Gauges/TIM_Water_Temperature_Gauge_Electrical/813/1528 its much better than land rover gauges as it gives exact temp and it comes with different thread adaptors to fit, and is good value. western
the VDO Vision temp gauge & matched sender is a good alternative to the Factory LR gauge. VDO temp gauge
