firing up a 2.5 N/A lump

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

planning on driving from Switzerland back to the UK on thursday but having a bit of trouble firing the old girl up.

car hasn't moved for over a year but was running fine before.

the solenoid clicks. the engine turns over but dosn't fire. . air is getting sucked in thru the snorkel (can hear it).

we tried spraying some wd40 in thru the air intake and the engine *almost* fired and some white smoke appeared. this is making me think its a fuel delivery problem although we loosened the injectors and fuel seeped out (when being towed along).

did hear that spraying some petrol in thru the air intake works well.. but didn't quite have the nerve to try that :P

any little tricks?

thanks!

Barry

check your lift pump is working, loosen off the pipes at the injectors and turn engine over til u're convinced there is fuel there, if it doesn't get there then check lift pump and fuel shut off valve

When it was being towed with the injector pipe connectors loose there was fuel leaking out

so I presume it reached there at least.

The lift pump seems to work as I pumped it manually to bleed the system through to the pump.

Its got 20L of fresh diesel in it and maybe had 10L of old diesel before.

Next step is to pull out the injectors and try and see if they squirt when motor is being turned over...

pretty frustrating though! it got towed round the block about 10 times last night in the rain!

check the filters ok and filled, check the lift pump, a section of clear pipe put in between the filter housing and the distributor to check for bubbles caused by leaky lines to rule that out, crack the injectors and make sure they are bled, check the return line to make sure fuel is being returned, check there is voltage to the fuel stop solenoid and check the solenoid is pulling in when power is supplied, nice healthy charged battery and away it should go <_<

Get a nice beaffy V8 to drag it till it starts thats what we used to do.

it sounds like you have checked every thing else

Check for water in the filter and drain it if needed.

then just towing around till she goes

Took out the plunger of the solenoid valve and it fired up instantly!

Thought it couldn't be that as fuel was still getting through to the injectors..

Even had a spare lying around in the back so everything fixed. ;)

thanks for all the suggestions....

Update - Poor Barry set off from Zurich to UK yesterday afternoon - got to somewhere like Toule

in France and the engine stopped - not sure what it is, could be timing belt. His phone is out of

power and credit!

Lucky the roof tent is still on there....

Hope he can join the RAC quick!
