Dorsetfreelander
The battery on my TD4 completely failed yesterday, so I nipped out to get a replacement from Halfords (£93 - sounds a bit steep but I didn't have time to shop around). My problem started when I tried to undo the bolt holding down the existing battery. The bolt just went round and round and wouldn't come out - there is obviously a captive nut under the battery tray set into the plastic. I tried to get the battery tray out but found later that it's held down by a bolt under the battery. After about an hour of messing about I managed to get a junior hacksaw into position and by lying across the engine managed to saw the head off the bolt and remove the old battery. What started out as a 10 minute job took about two hours and I have still got to find a way to replace the sawn off bolt. It's worth perhaps just removing the bolt once in a while and putting some oil on it so that you don't have the same problem, if you are away from home how would you get the replacement battery in to get the car started? Otherwise carry a junior hacksaw as part of your toolkit!!!
MrKev
Don't halfords only charge about £2.99 to change a battery ?
western
give the bolt a good coat of antisieze grease or coppaslip before gitting & regrease it every few months.
Dorsetfreelander
Don't halfords only charge about £2.99 to change a battery ? Actually it's £4.99 but first you have to get the car to Halfords and it was stuck at home, the battery had failed completely (no warning signs previously) and when you took the jump leads off it would stop immediately! LiamC
I had the same problem, I had to drill the bolt to free the battery clamp. Instead of trying to repair the large centre fixing I drilled two new holes in the clamp and used two smaller bolts to secure it to the battery tray. Mark
I think I have a complete Freelander battery tray sat here if it is of any use? (provided it's the same as a petrol one)...
