V8 4.6 rough idle

I've got a Disco 1 fitted with a P38 4.6 V8 with an RPI chipped (Tornado) GEMS ecu. Problems started lately when starting up. It would need cranking more then once and need to help out with the gas pedal, where before it would start at first turn.

Also, apart from that, idle in neutral when on the move is intermittent, ie hitting 500rpm, up to 1500rpm and back.

ANy ideas what might be?

thanks,

bob

No 16 on diagram, i think it is located on the back left hand side of the plenum chamber

Hi fozsug,

this looks like the hotwire version plenum chamber, not the GEMS ? (Look in the manual linked to in previous post)

Yay, I guessed correct

The pipe just above it is the engine breather, so oily air blows down it into the plenum and can gum them up over a period of years. Frequent short journeys can really bung it up with water vapour & oil that forms a white emulsion very similar to what you get when the head gasket goes, quite alarming if you're not expecting it!
