il-bob
I've got a Disco 1 fitted with a P38 4.6 V8 with an RPI chipped (Tornado) GEMS ecu. Problems started lately when starting up. It would need cranking more then once and need to help out with the gas pedal, where before it would start at first turn. Also, apart from that, idle in neutral when on the move is intermittent, ie hitting 500rpm, up to 1500rpm and back. ANy ideas what might be? thanks, bob
FridgeFreezer
Stepper idle valve, give it a clean up.
il-bob
Is it this thing circled in red? If so, with what do I clean it? thanks, bob
FridgeFreezer
No, I'm not very familiar with standard 4.6's but I think it may be just down and to the right of your circle (which is the throttle sensor). The idle valve should have four wires going to it.
Roverbo
Looks like it, maybe this old document will help...My link. Haven´t got any experience if the stepper motors in the GEMS system tends to stick like in the 14CUX hotwire system? Regards Bo
fozsug
No 16 on diagram, i think it is located on the back left hand side of the plenum chamber
Roverbo
Or why not read the complete story - this manual describes the GEMS system in details...My linkfrom the muddy oval site (these chaps got the most...and they are not british). Roverbo
No 16 on diagram, i think it is located on the back left hand side of the plenum chamber Hi fozsug, this looks like the hotwire version plenum chamber, not the GEMS ? (Look in the manual linked to in previous post) Bo Edited January 18, 2011 by Roverbo
il-bob
Had a look into the manual and found out the idle control valve is the one circles in this pic Will remove tomorrow and give it a good clean with brake cleaner tks guys, bob
FridgeFreezer
Yay, I guessed correct The pipe just above it is the engine breather, so oily air blows down it into the plenum and can gum them up over a period of years. Frequent short journeys can really bung it up with water vapour & oil that forms a white emulsion very similar to what you get when the head gasket goes, quite alarming if you're not expecting it! il-bob
Both problems solved . Cleaned the idle control valve and noticed that the pipe with the yellow and green tape on it was cracked. I believe that pipe is used for vacuum. CHanged pipe and all fine. Thanks guys, bob
