matthew74
Hi, does anyone know the normal max turbo boost pressure for a '99 td5. Ta, Matt.
stuck
Will watch this with interest ...
Anderzander
I read it was about 15 - with the ECU cutting back if it reached 20.
stuck
But what is relatively safe if you upgrade the Turbo, map, intercooler and fit an over boost box? Oh yes, and the HG
discomikey
poeple run more IIRC, you can get a box to trick your ECU. couldnt tell you exactly thought
matthew74
The reason i asked was that the boost gauge always stopped at about 15psi and I thought this was the norm. Yesterday I took it on the motorway for the first time since I flushed the intercooler a few weeks ago and It went all the way upto 20psi. Anderzander
You can adjust the actuator rod to set the wastegate to let it go up to around 20 - however if it goes over that the ECU, through controlling the map, cuts it back to reduce the pressure. I believe it can also go into 'limp home mode' from over boost. I'm not sure what you can safely go up to with a box, with diesels having such high pressures anyway I think the risk is greater. Where is Porny these days?
stuck
Sorry to hijack but can anybody point me in the right direction for a boost gauge suitable for a '99 TD5? I'm unsure if they are electronicaly or pressure driven. Thanks, Mick. P.S. would hate anything that would look at home in an Evo or Imprezza
discomikey
go for VDO guages. im not sure of the spec. you wont need more than 25 - 30PSI on the guage check under the bonnet, if the wastegate has a small pipe coming from it then you need a normal pressure operated guage, i dont think ive seen on electronically operated. there will be one probably but i think a TD5 is pressure operated boost control i could be wrong. Anderzander
I think you get better readings if you can fit the gauge into the inlet manifold rather than the pipe work.
discomikey
depends what youre after, my boost guage is going to be fitted to the turbo wastegate pipe because i want to know what my turbo is boosting at, so i dont overcook it. if you want real inlet pressure, then yes at the manifold is where it needs to be put. Anderzander
That's a fair point - though I believe a lot of modern turbos can work upto 30 psi, which is way more than the motor could cope with.
saxosportsaxo
I know its not a TD5 but my defender 200 tdi with oversized intercooler is running at 1 bar
