MONKEYCOPPER Posted July 11, 2011 Share Posted July 11, 2011 Hi all, Have had a bit of a missfire while under load mainly so looked at that red plug and there aint really oil in it but ther is an oily substance similar to diesel in looks and touch but not smell !! Well, today ive replaced injector loom and rocker cover gasket and cleaned red plug and socket with brake cleaner, all good you may think,,,, Nope, its same but sometimes worse now !!! and it sounds like an air cooled VW !! Please can anyone help or advise what may be wrong or have i missed something ??? Reading les's write up in tech he says it may hiccup but for how long and will i do more damage by driving it as is ?? Guest Posted July 11, 2011 Share Posted July 11, 2011 Paul, I had something similar to this which bugged me for around 3 months finally with the help of SiWhite and his Rovercom we found it, I had 3 problems non on their own were causing the problem but together were: 1. Oil in the loom I replaced the loom and cleaned it etc but it took several weeks of brake cleaner to get it all out squirting it in from the top of the loom and letting it work it's way down, I also stripped down the ECU and cleaned oil out of that. 2. MAF it hadn't gone or showing a fault but was not reading the correct figures 3. Fuel pressure regulator was leaking slightly All common faults and on their own not enough to cause a fault but together had enough impact to 'misfire' and cause a loss or power I am not saying this is the issue but worth a look. It took me ages to find as none of them was serious enough I thought it was air in the fuel or a blockage and changed the filters etc. Jason. MONKEYCOPPER Posted July 12, 2011 Author Share Posted July 12, 2011 Thanks Jason, its not long had fuel regulater, and its on clean filters and oil as i serviced her at the weekend, she developed missfire on sunday, I think im just gonna have to keep cleaning loom and red plug, saturday she ran, as always sweet, then started to miss in 3rd gear so i thought i was doing right and nippin it in the bud, by changing injector loom, If it gets actually into ECU is that d-i-y-able to take apart and clean ?? i seem to remember thread on here but cant find it. thanks Jason Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Posted July 12, 2011 Share Posted July 12, 2011 Hi Paul, The Post in the tech archive is for a discovery TD5 not a defender so slightly different, however the principle is the same. IIRC the ECU was held together by 4 security screws Les's post does not mention cleaning the ECU but mine had a fair bit of oil in it so I didn't have a lot of choice!! I cleaned it with brake cleaner and then electrical cleaner. I was surprised how long it took to clean all of the oil out of the loom mine took about 3 weeks to work all of the oil out of the loom going back every couple of days and squirting some more brake cleaner and mopping up the excess. MONKEYCOPPER Posted July 14, 2011 Author Share Posted July 14, 2011 Well, ive cleaned it and cleaned and its still missing, What is strange is the "oil" in the loom has a red tinge to it , similar to ATF fluid, And when it does miss there is a smell thats best described as a cross between creosote and LPG !! MONKEYCOPPER Posted July 15, 2011 Author Share Posted July 15, 2011 Hi Porny, funnily enough i checked that at same time i did the loom and its ok (i think) Just really curious as to what the red liquid is, my only conclusion is dye out of red plug ???? oh an the bloody missfire, it has started to behave a bit better but foot down and it pops like a barsteward !! Mine was 2 things: bad contact in fuel pump fuse (I had to put it in an individual external fuse link) and a defective relay (the one under the dash)... Gromit Posted July 21, 2011 Share Posted July 21, 2011 if you shorted the relay socket under the drivers seat and the pump didn't make any noise, you can apply 12v to the top of the pump before you remove it, to see if there is any life in it.
