SPendrey
Hi All, The auxiliary belt tensioner stud decided to come out today, more specifically while doing the nut back up (to 45Nm according to RAVE) the stud just started spinning. Why would the stud be in to 14Nm, but the nut 45Nm? Anyway, I re-tapped the hole and flipped the stud round so the longer threaded part is attached to the engine block/aluminium frame thing, but it still doesn't feel too good. Plus I don't want to tighten the nut to 45Nm again in case I remove another load of thread. Anyway, enough rambling, my question is what would you do next to correct the situation? I plan to buy a new stud, but what to do about the low thread quality in the hole now? Pictures here... 8171 - The engine-end of the stud, still with the stripped thread attached. 8174 - The hole where the stud was (before I cleaned it out) 8176 - The thread removed from the stud 8177/8 - Noticed the short end of the stud is bent slightly, probably due to "the penny trick" being used to stop the squealing Thanks, Scott
stuck
Can you Helicoil it?

SPendrey
Having looked up 'helicoil', I think that's what the thread-like thing is?!
DaveSIIA
That is a coil of aluminium thread which has pulled out. A helicoil is a wire insert which winds into a slightly oversize, tapped hole to form a very robust anchor in a soft parent material. Niamh
A Helicoil costs a little less Niamh
Boydie
And Helicoils have the advantage of being stronger than the original alloy thread
SPendrey
Fair enough, got a Helicoil kit arriving today, and hopefully a replacement stud tomorrow. Will see how it goes.
SPendrey
Well, thank you. A helicoil did it after much puzzling about how to drill out the hole cleanly and squarely. Now all I need to do is fix the electric fan which has now decided to turn on all by itself. Never ends does it?
