Drive Shafts

Hi,

I want to install an Ashcroft 24 spline locking differential in rear axle of my 200tdi.

Problem is my half shafts are 10 spline. There has been some previous discussion about using 24 spline shafts from a 300tdi, but apparently the holes in the integral drive member don't match up to the 200tdi hubs.

I've heard that there may be a solution by using early V8 Defender 24 Spline Shafts with the thicker drive members.

Does anyone know if this is possible preferably with part numbers?

It has been suggested I change the whole axle, but I have just cleaned up casings and painted, fitted new hub bearings, seals and discs etc and don't want to do again.

Another thought, could holes in 300tdi drive shaft flange be elongated to suit hub?

Hello,

While swapping the rear axle on my 90 I learnt a little about different drive shafts (this said, if anyone else knows better please correct me).

Firstly, if your Discovery is a later 200tdi then it will have the 'thin' flange 10 spline drive shafts which are interchangeable with the 24 spline shafts. The Ashcroft website has a good picture of these two side by side.

If not, then it is an earlier version with the thick flange shafts (the same as early Range Rovers).

As you say, you cannot change between thick and thin flange shafts (easily...)

What you can do is swap the stubaxles and hubs for later (metric ?) ones to accept a thin flange drive shaft, keeping your axle casing (see Crown Diffs as they sell a kit. Steve is a helpful chap). I believe the bearings and discs are the same.

However, one option may be to fit Ashcroft hardened shafts as well (there is probably a bit a debate over running a locker with standard or upgraded shafts...). Looking on the Ashcroft site they say that if you are converting from a 10 spline shafts then all you need is a 24 spline diff - this might mean that they have a drive member to fit both metric and imperial hubs but I would certainly phone and speak to them first.

Not sure about elongating the holes in a 300tdi shaft. Not something I would recommend.

Regards

MW

I've go the early imperial rear rangy axel so I went to KAM rear 24 shafts and ashcroft flanges, with the nice big shiny nut on the outside. (Now I would have put ashcroft shafts in) They are the right PCD and spiggot size for the older axel. And so, all went together okay.

And if you go with HD ascroft shaft and flanges, you won't wince everytime you use the difflock in anger :)

I did consider the different stub axels. It is all very confusing. On the front I suggest getting a metric axel. I didn't and now wish I had!

Some folks use standard 24 spline shafts okay with a locker. But for nearly all the off road comunity the ashcroft shafts are fit-and-forget, allowing the nut loose behind the wheel to apreciate the country side :i-m_so_happy:

I love the front ones as well. I back out of silly situations without CV 'fear'

Thanks for info.

I found a local guy breaking a 300tdi so I got the stub axles, drive shafts and hubs, all in good nick. 300tdi drive shafts would never have fit my 200tdi hubs. I've bought a 24 spline diff from a breaker, when I got it I found it's from a Disco 2. I hope it fits my axle case. I think ratio is same.
